is the dlc really bad?
i haven't played this in a long time and thought maybe i'd get back into it with the dlc but looking at the reviews kinda has me hesitant.. I already have 350 hours in the game so it should be pretty interesting, otherwise i'd just kinda get bored

The DLC itself is fine. Not as good as Survivors of the Void but still fine. Many of the items people don't care for and see them as bloat. Twisted elites are the biggest thing people have issue with (Gilded too but less-so), but not much else.

The bad reviews are because of a patch that came out at the same time as the DLC. The patch caused tons of issues for people, ranging from stuff doing tons more damage/attacks not working right if you had high FPS to deleting your profile data. Many incorrectly expressed their views for the patch on the DLC store page. Recent patches have since addressed most of the egregious stuff and it is now playable (though changes to the spawning director has made it harder).
The main reason the dlc got review bombed was because of the free patch that came along with it that broke pretty much everything in the game. Since then they released a couple patches that made the experience much better (even thought not everything is fixed yet).

As for the DLC itself, the main consensus from what I've seen is that:
  • The Stages are great.
  • The Final boss is fine with the exception of that one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ attack that ruins the whole fight for some people.
  • Seeker is the best new character (even though her playstyle is not for everyone), Chef is the worst and the secret one, while interesting, lacks polish, especially regarding his animation.
  • The elites are bad, Gilded ones are cool in paper but are way too scaled up stats wise and shows up way too often cause bugs. The other one I haven't seen it myself but apparently he's a late run ender that you cannot really fight against if you have specifics items and builds (which happens often).
  • Regarding the items, most of the new whites are situational at best, useless at worst which bloats the item pool as they don't work well with the other mechanics in the games. The Lunar is horrible, some greens are cool, the reds are fine but one of them should be a green one according to some people.
  • The enemies are ok (though I've seen people having issues dealing with the childs). One of them is just too rare to be noticeable in the run and is slightly buggued righht now.

Gearbox has announced on their official twitter that they're working on a mega balance patch that'll fix a lot of underpowered, overpowered, and janky portions of the DLC, so you should wait until that update comes out before even considering getting it.

I highly doubt they'll touch Sale Star, and if they do, it'll probably be them just touching up the logbook entry to have it make a bit more sense. It's literally the only item (with the possible exceptions of chance doll and seed of life) that people have been praising as a good item, so they'd be utterly braindead to change it in any significant way.

If you can find a lobby I'd suggest hopping into public multiplayer servers which have the DLC enabled. This has been the main way I've been experiencing the DLC so far, with the only thing I'm really missing out on being the new survivors as well as the new alt skins, which is whatever. Play some games with other people to get a good judge on whether you enjoy the new content added in the DLC before deciding to pick it up for yourself. Though yes, as havenharpy mentioned a big rebalance patch is coming so that may or may not improve the overall quality.

For its price, it isn't worth it. If it were $5 maybe, but $15 for a bunch of bad white and green items you likely won't use, a horrible lunar, the addition of the two worst elites in the game (unless they are base game I don't know), and 3 characters ranging from mediocre to kind of bad it's not worth it.

i'd kinda have to disagree with the character comment, sure chef is the worst survivor in the game by far, but seeker is extremely good (and in multiplayer the best survivor in the game), then the secret new survivor is probably the 2nd best survivor overall and in single player (sure he may lack some polish or actual information on how he works though).

i wouldn't describe any of the new survivors as "mediocre" you got 2 really strong ones and 1 really bad one.
