YUP, it's genuinely awful. It might not even be your fault, atg or ceremonial knives can mess you up too. Or gas / wisp and oops you're dead now.
Thankfully, removing them from existence doesn't hamper the game's difficulty in any significant way, it just becomes properly playable again. Eclipse is still a very significant challenge, and if you find Simulacrum too easy I have a mod on the store for that.
I think the craziest part is you can easily balance that out by having them HEAL whatever is in their area instead of giving everything thorns aura and they would be 100 times better as an enemy. Annoying, sure, but you don't need to be afraid to target them out of fear of instantly ending your run.
