I don't main Mercenary so I can't give advice on the other thing, I mainly just hold the primary button and hope for the best. One thing I sometimes do though is I won't use the dashes in quick succession. I may do something like dash>whirlwind>dash>eviscerate>dash or some random variation of that, it depends on the situation such as if I want to save the eviscerate i-frames to avoid a Vagrant nova or keep a dash or two to get to cover to avoid a Vagrant nova.
Should mention that I use Whirlwind, Focused assault, and Slicing winds
I've not played in a minute, but thats the only strategy that kinda matters imo.
The other person elaborated on slamming with the dash to instakill flying enemies, but I think hopoo tried to remove that entirely many patches ago. I remember it used to be best to hug the enemy on top (AWU or vagrant for example) then dash downward, then they changed it so that you needed to end your dash within them, then they basically removed it around 1.0 I think? At extremely high attack speed/movespeed it might occur sometimes/rarely even now but i figured they patched out the exploit long ago.
Merc is my most played (vanilla) survivor, i run default because the extra mobility+iframes are invaluable for me. Sometimes i use uppercut for the band proc and raw damage thanks to backup mags, but it can get unwieldy and i miss the horizontal mobility from whirlwind.
