Ethereal Challenge
What can I say? Nothing screams FUN quite like banging your head against a brick wall. Honestly, that would be less painful than this achievement. Or should I say, lack of achievement

Its one of the most poorly designed challenges in this game. I see it defended a lot, but honestly I dont think anything thats an ability should be locked behind an actual challenge (that isnt just do X number of things). When you only have 2 abilities, having 50% of them locked away blows

Like, really, why is this still a thing on here? I have 300+ hours in the game and have spent many hours of that time trying to do this ridiculous task. I'd like to 100% the achievements since I love the game so much and even more so would REALLY like to finally have the Mercenary's last skill. I just started to play this again after about a year er so break and thought maybe, just maybe, with the new updates they adjusted this. Nope. It enrages me so deeply. I've tried on so many different prismatic trial scenarios and it just never seems to work on any of them. It isn't even a fun challenge to try to overcome. Half the time you think you haven't been hit and waste a bunch of time playing through the whole thing. I hate the whole thing so much. Sorry, I just wasted another hour at this thing AGAIN and needed to vent somewhere.

You literally just wait until its a Prismatic Trial with Glass but not Spite or Soul. Kin and Command will make it even easier. With that set up you should be able to get it in less than an hour if you know Merc fairly well.

The wait for the perfect trial sucks but they change every 3 days so it will eventually show up.

A good tip is that barrier (IE what you get from Topaz Brooch) doesn't count as damage so if you do have Command then get one or two of those and you can afford a hit every so often as long as you keep killing.

It can take actual months for that to happen. I know there is (or was) some dude out there completing every single Trial hitless to prove its possible, but that doesnt make it any better. The fact that you could just have to wait 3 days alone is pretty horrendous

I understand the frustration, but it just takes some patience and effort. That’s what getting all the achievements in a game should entail in my opinion. Cabbage on YouTube posts a tutorial for every trial, and sometimes a good one will show up.

I agree, but half of the survivors abilities shouldnt be locked behind them. Thats the lame part. In a game where the slightest variance in how you can play, even if its sub-optimal, is huge, putting things as important as skills behind challenges as frivolous as Ethereal is lame. Having difficult achievements is great, putting what little content outside of mods that exists behind them is archaic. Even Risk of Rain Returns understood this

I think it's fine to lock stuff behind achievements. At least they're worth doing then.

This is a special case though to me. It's the hardest achievement by far. Not only is avoiding any damage really hard sometimes, seeds can very in difficulty too much

Every achievement can be made easier and more accessible with artifacts but this can't.

I got lucky and had a seed where you spawn next to a preon accumulator so you could at least 1 shot bosses. Still took me a while to get it.

I wouldn't even say Risk of Rain Returns really understood it, either. Sure, all survivor abilities have alternate unlock options (which, don't get me wrong, is really, really appreciated), but there are a good few non-cosmetic items that are locked exclusively behind Providence Trials, which, just like Prismatic Trails, can't be adjusted difficulty-wise. (In fact, Providence Trails could be considered worse, since you can't hope for a variation with artifacts enabled that make things easier.)

Yes, thats a very fair criticism of it. It still was not perfect, but a step in the right direction

Yeah, I have 140 hours in the game, all achievements done except this. I suck with melee characters, not getting hit at all is gonna take A LOT of attempts.
Kinda just wanna give up and consider 99% achievements good enough.

Everytime I ask anyone about this all they say is “just watch Cabbage” like yeah, I get that a pro can beat this challenge in every seed. But that’s the thing. He’s literally a pro. He does this every three days, he obviously knows the character and the game mode better than anyone else. And even trying to practice his route, if the enemies don’t move in the “optimal way” it throws the whole thing off. I had a really good route on this current seed, but sometimes the enemies spawn in different places, or don’t follow the same paths and it can ruin things. I love this game and I’ve put a lot of hours in, but I’m in no way a pro. So feeling like getting the last achievement requires me to become a pro just isn’t a fun, enjoyable, or balanced experience to me.
