So it seems like the survivors are the bad guys
Everything I've read so far indicates this planet is conscious and connected. That it tries to defend itself from us, as an invasive threat. They certainly were correct as we kill thousands upon thousands of inhabitants, citizens, sentries and other various forms of life.

Doesn't it seem like the main character is a villain?

Survivors are as the name imply those who survived a spaceship crashing into the planet, the logs make it pretty clear that nothing on the planet wants them there so it's a fight for suvival

the way I heard it, the first game the characters are forced to kill the enemies to survive. this game they just come back and are like "lmao kill em up"

Pretty sure Acrid's log explains that his ass was in a test tube prior to the ship being brought down, and that incident is what caused him to be able to escape from his confinement.

Yeah, but still, we find him sleeping, peacefully, without enemies attacking him. You could say we crash-landed on the planet, and the natives are attacking us to protect their resources that we want to fix our ship and get back, which brings a lot of questions, but you can say this about Acrid.

Here's a thought OP: not every story has good guys vs bad guys. Sometimes there are neither.
Someguyinhere 27 JUN 2022 a las 10:18 p. m.
The actuality of it is there isn't a good guy or a bad guy.

Providence did what he honestly felt he had to in the first game, which resulted in an all-out battle that the survivors triumphed in, ending in Providence's death. The denizens of the planet likewise do what they truly feel they have to when a rescue team comes looking into the distress beacon from the first ship, and the cycle repeats with the death of Providence's brother and the destruction of the moon.

Nobody is the bad guy, or the good guy. It's just a series of unfortunate situations.

i like this explanation.
providence wasn't actively trying to be evil or whatever, he was just looking out for the people under his care.

Not necessarily "bad" guys. I mean, they HAVE to fight back. Third party of the events, I'd say... You do know the plot of the first RoR and Providence's motives? Have you learned of his conflict with the boss of the second RoR? I mean, they(humans) got involved in it, but, yet, would Providence act differently towards that cargo ship... and events would most likely turn in some other way.

Yet, there is a reason why EVERYTHING on that planet wants you dead and they work together and it's not "badness" of you or the inhabitants, but, something else. And I strognly advise to read the logs and analyze the timeline described.

What do you mean by "we find him sleeping"? In RoR1 we find him in a box, and when we open it - he tries to kill us. And in RoR2 he sleeps peacefully in some sort of a void bubble (when he spawns in, instead of a drop pod), and when that bubble opens - he wakes up. Btw I was killed several times during this waking up animation because enemies don't wait politely until Acrid is fully awake. So enemies don't ignore him sleeping, because there are no enemies in an isolated void bubble.

It's not so much that they're the bad guys as it is that they're *not* the good guys and may accidentally be doing something not good.
They're doing pretty reasonable things. In the first risk of rain they're trying to survive after some lunatic blew up their ship. He blew it up because of what was on it, but that wasn't their fault.
In the second, it's an entirely different team looking for the survivors in the first game. The first ship is sending off a distress signal, after it, y'know, mysteriously blew up.

They aren't evil for trying to survive and fend off the crazy lunatic in the first game. However, killing Providence 'defender of the weak' probably isn't doing any good for the world either.

This isn't entirely accurate, though. The context of "how" we unlock characters is important. As well as what exactly this planet is and how it came to be/why all of these different creatures are on it.

A lot of the plot from RoR explains the cotext for RoR 2. And spoilers but we have to use a portal to the void, survive the waves, and activate the beacons there to unlock Acrid. He's imprisoned there and his character file further confirms this. Our actions in that void field literally free him This is why a void bubble is over his body in the beginning of a run and why he's "waking up." He's still thrown into this hostile planet and just trying to survive like everyone else.

I didn't play Risk of Rain that much, so I have no idea about the lore of the first game.
About Risk of Rain 2, I imagine, of course, how we unlock characters is important, but what characters do after the unlocking is important as well...

Why is Acrid sleeping in the middle of a hazardous environment with a lot of creatures trying to kill it? I just had a run the same way as theUsual did, even before controlling Acrid, it was taking damage because some creatures were attacking him on the sleep.

So... It's in captivity, we free it, and it's sleeping on a situation like that? Doesn't seems a little off, maybe there's something missing between we free Acrid, and Acrid waking up in the middle of the field.

Acrid is likely the same acrid from risk of rain 1. He got trapped in the void and we freed him. He isn't part of the rescue team for sure.

Nothing is missing if we assume that each run is one of the versions of the timeline, which makes sense to me since we don't get any mention of a timeloop and of Mithrix being killed over and over - same as is it was in RoR1 where Providence died to a survivor with 7 pairs of glasses and stayed dead. So Acrid, being the one who's prior to the beginning of RoR2 was imprisoned in the void "indefinitely" (since that's how YOU get imprisoned if you die to a blackhole of any of the void enemies), doesn't just sleep on the planet's surface - the only explanation that makes sense to me is that he get's free from the eternal imprisonment somehow while he's still asleep, gets teleported back to the planet where he was taken in the first place and THEN wakes up shortly after.
