What is ruin and how do I use it? (Essence of Heresy)

I'm having a hard time finding information about this thing.

I picked up an Essence of Heresy and it replaced one of my mobility skills without warning. (Yes, now I know.) I pressed the button when up against close enemies and far away enemies and I could not figure out what the heck it did other then to send out a purple bolt. I've played two and a half five maps with it. I'm actually typing this while dead on a level.

Can anyone explain it to me? One guy in the multiplayer match with me also didn't know.

Dealing damage adds a stack of Ruin for 10 (+10 per stack) seconds. Activating the skill detonates all Ruin stacks at unlimited range, dealing 300% damage plus 120% damage per stack of Ruin. Recharges after 8 (+8 per stack) seconds.

When Essence of Heresy is not on cooldown (not 100% sure about this) your attacks apply a stacking debuff on the enemy called Ruin. When you use Essence of Heresy you deal damage to all enemies with Ruin (this is the purple bolt you saw) the amount of damage dealt is based on how many stacks of Ruin they have. I'd suggest trying it out on someone like Commando to get a better understanding of how it works.

If you go the thunderstore.io and get the RoR2 mod manager, there's a mod where you can test every item.

Use artifact of command: you just need to go to the lunar shop, open an lunar item pod (be careful, some lunar items are actually equipment, so it won't work if you open the wrong pod) and choose Essence from the list that appears.
