Overall I think its my new favorite character, I just hate u cant move while transforming, it lost me a few runs, but if they allow movement but you cant shoot while transforming, i feel then it would be perfectly fine.
with some small differences, all the survivors play they same because they are the same. humans, with a weapon. therfore, they play similar. rex, acrid and now fiend are the oddballs. therfor you can't play them like the humans. rex plays a kiting game along with managing his hp, acrid flips between applying poison at range and leaping in to do some quick killing. void is about balance.
early game: managing your corruption is key. always try to keep it high, but not max. if you see a large group of enemies let yourself corrupt and wipe them, then return to balance. always go into the portal event with corruption ready. use your mobility as a dodge as much as possible. you can phase through enemies with it in both forms. bomb your enemies in corrupt mode before going in with the laser. additionally, your m2 can knock you back, use this for mobility too.
mid game: at this point a choice needs to be made. do you go with the proc chain fiend, that likes to stay in their controlled form, or the onhit fiend, that likes to be corrupted as much as possible.
for proc chain, get the usual elements of a proc chain ( atg, ukelale, wisps etc) along with lots of healing. stay at range and use your long range attacks to take enemies out from afar. survival is key and hardlight afterburner is excellent for getting out of bad situations. AVOID (pun intended) void items as much as possible, we want to keep your corruption as low as possible.
for corrupted, do the exact opposite. get loads of on hit stuff and go crazy with void items. personal recomendations go to plasma shrimp and voidflame + loads of crowbars. void fiend attacks fast in corrupted form, and can be boosted further with crits and predator. get scythes only when you're comfortable with controling your corruption.
late game:
invest heavily into your chosen playstyle and look into some lunars. perma tonic makes corrupt fiend even scarier while flux pauldrons can really help controlled fiend with making escapes and spamming long range orbs.
You literally need to constantly stop what you are doing and use a useless ability if you want to remain consistent. It is the definition of clunky.
They literally looked at Tainted Samson and went "what if we had something like that but instead of the transformation being smooth and effortless we'll make it as obnoxious as we can"
The fact that his kit just feels like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ version of Artificer really doesn't help. Seriously, did they not realize how almost all of his attacks are already done better by a character already considered mediocre? Jesus.
His kit allows you to be pretty self sufficient, too. Between heals, debuff negation, movement, and high dmg it's all just so useful. I find they hit the mark with him. I haven't loved a character this much since Rex.
Would have been fun if it was a secret character unlock instead of one of the 2 dlc ones
Ahahah, my favorite character is Rex too, and I think I will like le Void Fiend too. :D
Totally dependant on items (good luck playing him without Command) with a horrifically weak kit that straight up stops working in the presence of any healing.
Needs a rework ASAP.
That said, he's a bit clunky and he's punished too hard for getting good healing going, honestly. If you're stuck in the passive form for a while he becomes really boring. Found myself deliberately taking damage just to be able to transform again.
But yeah Ive only 1 gripe with him just his whole self damage when corrupt instead of heal which has gotten me killed on solid runs where 1 second late R press got me instant killed
