Sudden pc restart while playing the game!
Hi guys!

First of all, I'm not here to complain about the game. I love Risk of Rain 2. But I'm starting this thread so maybe you guys can help me out. I've searched all throughout the internet and found no similar issue.

Ok. So what happens is: A lot of times, while playing RR2 my computer sudden restarts. I have no idea why. At first I thought it could be my CPU or GPU temperature, but that's not the case (as seen with CPUID HWMonitor). Which leaves to think that maybe it is some issue involving my CPU thermo paste or something. I really don't think this is game's fault. But anyway, I just had to make this thread about this issue. I know I haven't given much information, but I really don't know what more to say. It's just this. It restarts my pc out of nowhere.

What is very curious is that, this restart often happens on Bazaar. I mean 90% of the restarts are on Baazar map.

My specs (copy from Speccy):

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 7700K @ 4.20GHz 36 °C
Kaby Lake 14nm Technology
RAM
32,0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1199MHz (17-17-17-39)
Motherboard
MSI B250M BAZOOKA (MS-7A70) (U3E1) 36 °C
Graphics
PHL 223G5 (1920x1080@60Hz)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (ASUStek Computer Inc) 38 °C
Storage
111GB KINGSTON SV300S37A120G (SATA-2 (SSD)) 26 °C
447GB Crucial CT480BX500SSD1 (SATA (SSD)) 12 °C
223GB Crucial CT240BX500SSD1 (SATA (SSD)) 28 °C
931GB Dell Portable SCSI Disk Device (USB (SATA) ) 30 °C
Optical Drives
No optical disk drives detected
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

I have no idea if anyone can help me to guess what the problem is, but I had to try.

And again, this is NOT a hate post. I LOVE Risk of Rain, since the first one. I'm just seeking for opinions to solve this problem.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english.

Forgot to put the power suply: Corsair Bronze 750 W

To me that sounds like insufficient/dying power supply.

PSU dying most likely. Nothing related to temp it looks like. When it's temp a computer to what I understand doesn't restart. It power off to prevent damage, and will BSOD and freeze more often as temp causes electronics to be inefficient and make more mistakes.

The only way to truly verify is take a risk with a multimetre - I don't recommend that as you may harm yourself or damage it even more, or swap it out and see if it fixes it. You could stress test and see if it happens again as well but that doesn't say much beyond a hardware issue.

Well, thanks for the reply guys. I can't afford a new PSU right now. I tried to low my GPU usage, with MSI Afterbuner. I don't know if it's helping or not. And I'm trying not to visit Baazar map, since most of crashs happens when I purchase something there.

The PSU is more than enough to power the gear you got in your pc. Restarting isn't generally what happens from overheating. When was the last time you had a clean windows installation?
You'd be surprised how much that fixes stuff.
If you don't want to do that i recommend the following;
1. Download cinebench and do a test run to stress your cpu and see if the problem happens again.
2. Download firestrike to stress your GPU and see if the issue happens again.

If nothing happens after these 2 tests, it's either your windows or drivers that screw something up. Should a fresh installation still not help after that, one of your hardware components might be dying or causing the hardcrash. It could be the PSU, could also be cpu (though very unlikely as they don't break easily unless overclocked) if your gfx card is broken the system either hangs or crashes to desktop.

I had a clean windows installation about 2~3 months ago. I'll try do run those softwares to see if they point me to some place relevant. Thanks friend.

***Ah, my PSU is over 6 years old. I don't know if that is relevant. But this happens ONLY with Risk of Rain 2. Never happened with any other game.

Some sort of RAM problem?

You think so? Is there a way to run some tests?
ZeDoPovo Dec 17, 2020 @ 2:29pm
Update: I stressed my GPU with 3DMark, FurMark and Heaven Benchmark.

GPU: OK

Tested my CPU with Prime95 (stress test).

CPU: OK

Tested RAM with MemTest86 (booting with an usb)

RAM: OK

That leaves me with most of you guys assumptions, PSU issue.

I can't afford a new PSU for now, so I'm thinking about some ideas:

-Run the game in potato mode and hopes for the need for power to be reduced;
-screw around with the bios and voltage settings (dangerous);
-Don't play RR2 :(

So that's it. Thanks guys for everything, all the tips and help. Feel free to comment if you have any more thing to say!

Thanks again and sorry for my poor english.

See ya

I wouldn't touch the thing really. It could lead to further damage. Other than that, don't play anything that'll stress the system. At most I'd use IE/Edge/Chrome.

'bout it really. With a faulty PSU you put everything else at risk to my knowledge.

Did you ever solve this issue? I'm having the same problem.
ZeDoPovo Apr 5, 2021 @ 4:51pm
Hi friend! In my case it was the PSU. My PSU is a 750W, but it's over seven years old. I tested with my friend's PSU and everything was fine. Saving money for a new PSU now. :steamhappy:
Happyguy22 Apr 6, 2021 @ 4:05am
good to know that it's cleared up.

I'm glad too my friend! :)
