mithrix is providences brother, providence cares for the weak, aka the monsters, and mithrix doesn't give 2 ♥♥♥♥♥.

You can find most of it in the logbooks. You'll want to read Brittle Crown in particular, as well as Purity. Also see the logbooks for the hidden realms that have ENTRIES. Check Halcyon Seed as well.

In short, Mithrix and Provi were brothers. Mithrix was good at design, Providence hold at creation. Mithrix sought to leave the planet and travel into space, conquer other planets. For this purpose, he designed the Primordial Teleporter to take them to the moon, and Providence created it. From there they'd presumably make another one and go further.

Providence never followed, and Mithrix was stuck on the moon. He's been spending thousands of years devising a way to travel to Earth and conquer it when a robotic potted plant came along kicking his butt and ruined everything, then left in a spaceship piloted by useless vermin.

Life hasn't been very kind to Mithrix.

He's also a jerk that tosses worms into black holes.

What a loser.

He's a huge ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and could probably be described as a little bit evil but I think saying he's a twisted genius with no empathy is a bit much.

He definitely used to care for his brother as they were described in some lore items as playing together and spending time with eachother, and he also believes he and his brother make a great team that can do great things together. He seems to care deeply for his brother, or at least used to, so he's definitely not without empathy.

The big difference between him and Providence is that Providence cared deeply for all creatures of the planet, while Mithrix did not. Mithrix actually makes some good points about how Providence perhaps cares too much for the creatures of the planet or is actually acting selfishly by forcing the creatures to stay on the planet and never leave. Mithrix believes Providence wastes his time caring for weak and doomed creatures, while Mithrix wants to explore the universe and leave the planet and its creatures behind.

Providence also wanted to create creatures with souls capable of feeling emotions, but Mithrix did not want this. Mithrix wanted to create simpler creatures to act as servents or guards. He thought creations with souls would be less effective and best and a threat to the brothers at worst.

Eventually Mithrix devised a plan to use a series of portals and teleporters to travel across the universe, the teleportal to the moon was simply the first step. Once Mithrix and providence were on the moon they would build more teleporters to travel across all of space.

Though Providence did not agree with Mithrix's plan to leave the planet, and grew spiteful of his brother for his disliking of the creatures of the planet. So Providence tricked Mithrix into teleporting to the moon with no way to teleport back, trapping him there forever.

Since then he has spent centuries trapped on the moon, watching Providence and the rest of the planet. He has since grown so incredibly spiteful of the planet, its creatures and his brother that he has become cruel, tyrannical and monstrous, attacking any survivor that steps foot on his moon.

Also, when you kill him, he will cry out to his brother to help him, and even states that he and his brother might "Get it right next time". This shows that deep down he still cares about his brother and perhaps wants to work with him again, despite what his brother has done to him.

I think one of the more harrowing things about Providence is the fact that in Risk of Rain 1, the only reason (that seems explainable as to) why he attacked the USS Contact LIght was because there was a teleporter of Petrichor V in the cargo bay of the ship - indicated by the lore entry for Providence in the first game. It really shows as to how far Providence wants to deny or even allow anyone to ever find out about the moon and ultimately - his brother.

If you read the final stage's logbook (https://riskofrain2.gamepedia.com/Commencement), I think that rather than keeping his brother a secret, Providence is afraid Mithrix might attack other people and specifically Earth: "I know the planet you trail - of water and dirt. ... Maybe I will go there first". I suppose Providence didn't want to risk that by letting the USS Contact Light bring back that teleporter, so he took it down.

I have a hard time understanding the events of 2 with Mithrix in the mix. Player character comes to the planet either to rescue presumed survivors of the Contact Light or to get rich on planet loot, I guess. Once it becomes apparent there are no survivors to rescue/you have enough loot, you...go to the moon? By far the most dangerous location to be. And then a spaceship picks you up. Why not have the spaceship pick you up anywhere at all else? Why is anything the way it is?

I think it [the reasoning] varies with each survivor.

If I had any idea what it was for even one of them I'd probably be satisfied.

I think you only discover their motivation after you beat the game. IE: He Left, with everything but his Humanity (Commando, just a soldier following orders)

I know Artificer is just an explorer, she was on Petrichor V just by happenstance, and captured by the Newt Bazaar thing.

Sure but why go to the moon though? or if the moon is the objective, why go to the planet? It's pretty tough to even come up with a hypothetical.

there is many other survivors besides rex and even then he is way too punishing. nothing should one shot imo, because he teleports several times and then slams you, this is extremely stupid because if you dodge his previous attack and then he decides to slam and lets say you used all of your hopoo feathers and is slowly falling to the ground you can easily get slammed. Also on stage 4 it takes a couple stray needles to hit you, and if they dont then as a lot of characters you can sit extremely far away from him on the ramp and cheese him which makes him a total pushover, while you are shooting for your items back, its so incredibily skewed. Mithix will be at under 1/4 of his health but you only have back like 6 items.

Because theres a teleporter going to the moon they could use. Its either loop infinitely until you die or head to the moon, theres really no other choice.

Besides, you're the one controlling them, if you make them go to the moon thats your fault.
I actually think Mithrix is a bit of a tragic character. He was a bit of an egotistical ♥♥♥♥ but was far from evil and still cared deeply about some people, namely his brother, providence. He clearly sees his brother as an equal worthy of his respect, so when Providence betrayed Mithrix by stranding him on the moon he felt he was betrayed by the person he cared about the most. This alongside him being stranded by himself for centuries without being able to directly interact with anyone corrupted him into an evil madman. Its a bit sad.
