If it was "creative mode", you'd be able to spawn any item you want at any time.

I do wish there was a creative mode where you could just set a character, stage, items, simulated time in the run, just to see what it looks like and mess around.

Yeah. Controllable difficulty would be cool as well. It could be cranked up at the beginning for a challenge, or you could pause it if you're not feeling like dying.
