How to avoid damage?
I am very mobile and prioritize killing targets that I can't really dodge (like the wisps), but I still seem to be constantly taking damage. I am jumping and moving in different directions, but it never seems to prevent me from taking damage. I am also not really "visibly" getting hit and am mostly in the air from jumping. Tips?

Step 1: Play engi.

Step 2: Get many shrooms.

Step 3: Profit.

But for real though, get items that speed you up.

I do whenever I see them, but in the first few levels I almost never find any.

If you see the teddy bear known as "tough times" (I think) then make sure to pick at least one or two of those up, they give you a chance to not take damage when you get hit. Really good survivability item.

Yep it is. Unfortunately it's never guaranteed. Though I am mainly asking about how to actually play the characters and be able to not take damage, not which items to get.

Some enemies you just have to take cover from (wisps, stone golems and titans, etc) until you have a lot of movement speed or can stun them.

If you can't dodge the enemy attack simply by sprinting or moving, then you need to either take cover or stay out of it's range. It's all about understanding enemy attack patterns. You will take damage and you can't avoid it. You just need to not take too much of it.

Thanks, but what if there is no cover?

So this mean squishy characters are unplayable without god tier items in the first 2 levels?

You can probably finish the first 2 levels with no items at all, on any character. If there is no cover, kill the enemy from outside their range or run away. If there is no cover and they spawned on top of you, kill them before they attack you (wisps) or get behind them (golems). If all else fails, these enemies don't kill you in one hit by themselves, it's fine.

There is always cover. Also, if you're fighting an enemy that you know you need cover for, for example stone giant, then fight it where you have cover. If you don't, then that's your mistake.

I don't understand what you're trying to say here. There isn't a character in this game that cannot take some hits on their face. Moreover, every character has a dodge of some kind, or a way to mitigate damage somehow, and the ones that are squishy have ranged attacks that help you stay our of harms way. You will never die from a single wisp or golem attack, unless you're looping like crazy, and got a cheap shot from a malachite enemy or something like that. Even a stone giant beam can usually be tanked if you're full hp and use your dodge to avoid at least some of it. There is no problem staying alive in this game, even for the squishiest of characters. Stay mobile and aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
