Just curious, why this art direction?
I'm a sucker for pixel/ old school games and I own and played many hours of risk of rain on here and on the switch. Why did the developers decide to go with a more 3d model instead of just a bigger and better (more levels, enemies, characters, weapons, etc) risk of rain 1?

Im not a programmer or developer of video games but i think its beacuse 3D games can be supported easly for a long time. I think they did the right, they literally upgraded Risk of Rain in every single aspect but usin the same core gameplay. The only thing i really miss is the pixel art, it was incredible, new golems are cool but the new Colossus compared to the old one...kinda disspointed. Other thing is beacuse the online, the first Risk of Rain with the ports and IPs was horrible, seems it was attached to the core game so changin the online its impossible, now we have the p2p in RoR 2. I really hope in the future after the release of the game ( not the early access, the version 1.0 of the game) devs will make like "an artifact" to change every single enemy in 3d to a 2d enemy, you know, like the easter egg of Wolfenstein the new order, that would be awesome.

Speaking at length with PC Gamer, Paul Morse and Duncan Drummond said Risk of Rain 2 didn’t start out as a 3D project. “We had a 2D prototype,” said Drummond. “The twist for that one was you played as the monsters in the previous game. We didn’t want to make Risk of Rain but again.”

“One week it was 2D, the next it was 2.5, and the next week it was 3D, and we were pretty much making the assets in 3D and showing them as a 2D thing, so it was kind of a waste. Once we transitioned to 3D, it was like, ‘OK, we can actually do this if we want to.’ That’s where it took off.”

It seems that from an article from Kotaku, once interviewed, one of the original ideas of Hopoo was for it to be another 2D game, but did not want to make the game again, and to picture the items more clearly, they originally made them 3D, then tried showing them as 2D, but that was wasteful, and so after some thoughts, they decided to make a 3D game.
