How dose Repulsion Armor Plate work?

The first stack of the item gives a 5 damage reduction and each extra stack increases the 5 by +5

That's right it takes a flat 5(+5 per stack) from any damage you take. This includes bleeding burn, fall damage. I think it greatly helps with lesser wisps as they fire 3 shots and not just 1.

Important to note is that it cannot reduce the damage you take to below 1, meaning that even with 10,000 armor plates you would still always take atleast 1 point of damage from any source.
It should also go without saying that the repulsion armor plate is significantly more useful early on than it is at a later point of a run, just like fresh meat.
