Lore Discussion!
Hi. After watching some gameplays and sawing that there isnt a final boss or final cutscene, i was thinking how about we discuss the lore/story of the game we can make some theories

Since how RoR 1 finished you killed providence and it says that you are a monster so in my conclusion you still a villain killing every living thing and in this time you dont know what happened to the "cargo" ship. You can assumed it was destroyed again when our main characters were leaving the planet. And i mean if that was a cargo ship why you would need that kind of personel? A huntress, commando, mercenary and the robot? Clearly military. I think they were in that planet to colonize it and maybe slave the inhabitants of the planet since all the cargo is stuff that enhance the killing capabilities and survival of the soldiers.

What are your thoughs about this theory could you make agree with me or you would make another and more peacefull oriented theory? Lets hear yours!

I do hope the story gets more fleshed out in this version. It wasn't clear *at all* what was up with Providence in the first game.

Did you see the items coming out of that cargo ship? It was no ordinary cargo.
El_Verdugo 7 ABR 2019 a las 23:54
In the first opening cutscene you can see like parts or meteorites falling to the planet so we can assume that was the items you found on the planet

if i remember correctly the ship was a contraband cargo. The artefact were stolen from an ancient technology. Some monster were captured like Acrid. Providence destroyed the ship as a "robin hood" so we kinda the vilain. It all depends of interpretation and point of view. Maybe the compagny hired us to came back to seek for that lost cargo load. Read monster and item log from risk of rain 1.

Yeah i hope the lore is explained better in this game and maybe our prptagonist redeem theyselft for what they have done

The medkit item description and Rallypoint Delta’s being manmade has led some people to think this one’s a rescue mission gone bad. The Predatory Instinct description mentions the death of Providence so it’s definitely after the first game, and also off the medkit description it can be inferred The Enforcer died trying to protect the Rallypoint. We don’t have enough info to be sure whether these interpretations are correct, but it does seem to be solid from what we have so far.

As the predatory intinct mention that the one who killed providence had 22 eyes(id say either acrid or an imp(imps and ifrit are both invaders)). Also if you look through the game files in ror1 you will find that provodence have a theme as eye of providence and the holy spirit in religion(father: parent, son: child), id say that the story is about those who did not manage to escape the planet and a rescue mission gone wrong, most likly theirs another big boss lile providence of another faction on the planet who toke control when he died.

22 crimson, unblinking eyes. From the distance a lemurian would need to be at in order to survive to tell the tale, a pair of Lensmaker's glasses would likely look like a pair of red eyes. It's not too farfetched for Commando to have acquired 11 of them on his journey to the end. The log mentions the invader falling from the sky, quite easily attributed to the escape pod.

Maybe it's because i'm a Souls fan, but I really like the tidbits of lore from this game. From RoR1 we know that after the accident on the cargo ship that I suddenly forgot the name of, several chests and other containers crash land on this unknown planet, along with our player character. We're invaders, along with the Imps and Ifrit, and immediately try our best to survive. Of course, survival is one thing, but as we acquire items and amass power, our attempt at "survival" quickly turns into a massacre for the planet's natives. What was originally supposed to be a quick eliminating of the foreign threat(us) became a full-on campaign as the player gets deadlier and deadlier. However, as we learn from enemy descriptions, specifically Providence's, we learn(and something that might've been in the back of your brain from the start)that UES Contact Light or whatever owns the cargo ship in the first place has some history with this planet, its people, or both, which is the reason why there was a teleporter that led to the cargo ship itself. We kill Providence and ditch the place, essentially leaving the planet without a leader and protector. With the limited information available for Risk of Rain 2, we do know that it takes place after RoR 1, possibly on the same or a very similar planet. The Predatory Instincts speaks of a bipedal being with 22 unblinking eyes(some refer to the Lens Maker's Glasses, but I think the drones are more accurate, as you can pick some up in Providence's boss room(if my memory serves correctly)and they have little lights on their faces. We also get some information on another, very powerful entity from the lunar item descriptions. As RoR 1 left the planet without a leader, the <He> mentioned in some of the lunar items descriptions might be the new leader/protector of the planet. And there's another new entity in the form of N'khuna or whatever her name is, as we get a cheevo for destroying her idol/artifact in the water area that I forget the name of.

Also the Fandom Page [riskofrain.fandom.com] says we're looking for the wreckage of the UES Contact Light, which clears some things up(like our purpose for returning) but little else besides that.

well their are three points, it is the same planet as its mentioned in one of the notes(i think it was the key?) that the chest are the remains of the ship, <He> is newt(the blue lizard guy) and the description is about how he teach you to make the item and newt also seems to be the transcendent, also why do you start the game in an escape pod with what seems to be the commander from the original game, why did you returns?
PixelKind 21 JUL 2019 a las 8:42
alright so from what I've gathered:
- in RoR1, "Providence" blew up the UES Contact Light
- according to Predatory Instincts in RoR2, a bipedal being with arms and "22 unblinking crimson eyes" which, in the context of crit item flavor text, probably refers to 11 lens-makers glasses
- RoR2 is a recovery mission for the cargo of the UES Contact Light, based off the flavor text of Tougher Times

now heres where we get some funky sauce: the lunar item flavor texts
Shaped Glass and Hellfire Tincture clearly refer to <Him>, probably some sort of bizarre many-armed moon god of doom that might be our final boss. I dont think this is the moon newt trader fella since he's just hanging out in the cosmic bazaar and not trying to destroy worlds
The Brittle Crown flavor text refers to the PoV (i suspect this is Funky Moon God <Himself> but im not sure) having a brother who gathered doomed, planet-killing races into a world (probably The Planet, and i suspect the brother was Providence). there was a 'She' who apparently died for PoV's Bro and gave him a gift that allowed him to do that.

Saw something in the logs about space time bending gods as well? This is getting interesting
Derpykat5 23 JUL 2019 a las 13:22
Well, in the original game, the Contact Light was a "Cargo and Transport" ship, so all the guys are along for the ride. The last line from Providence's monster log heavily implies that a teleporter that was part of the same network as used on the planet was somehow loaded onto the ship. That, to me, implies that someone was stealing a whole load of things from the planet, and took a teleporter without realizing the consequences. At the end of the first game (assuming you win), you kill Providence and his Wurms, then blast off in the Contact Light. The outro cutscene clearly shows you flying away in the still functional ship, though the cargo holds are full of dead bodies (that's not just me saying that, the cutscene actually shows the cargo holds being full of dead bodies).

This game though, seems most likely to be a rescue mission for the other survivors who weren't lucky enough to board the ship before you (RoR1 character) take off without them. But without an end cutscene to see or a final boss to defeat, the most lore we have right now comes from item descriptions. Most of the lunar items reference a <Him>, and it's implied that this is the translator that is trying to translate the descriptions as filling in a word, so who knows who this <him> is, or if it even is a <him>. This seems to be some sort of god-like entity who has some sort of relationship with Providence, at least enough to criticize him for his actions.

That "22 unblinking red eyes" absolutely is referring to a previous survivor who beat RoR1, stacking the glasses 11 times (for reference, glasses used to give 7% crit chance, not 10, so stacking 11 wasn't completely pointless like it is here), so this absolutely takes place after RoR1.
Sensei Pasi 25 SEP 2019 a las 11:40
there is a pretty deep lore in ror 2. everything can be put together from the environment and item descriptions.

https://riskofrain.fandom.com/wiki/Brittle_Crown

Judging from the Brittle Crown log, someone's living on the moon and is the brother of recently deceased Providence, they're pretty excited now that he's dead so they can overthrow the planet. I'm pretty sure this is who we'll be dealing with in the endgame days, I'm also assuming this moon guy has some connection to the lunar items too.
