Don't understand the gameplay
I've tried this, and the first - and both seem to be a case of play until things take so many shots to kill that the game is impossible? So you die, and nothing unlocks so you haven't progressed - repeat ad infinitum? Where are the weapon upgrades to keep up with the ever increasing difficulty? :/

The items are your weapon upgrades, So keep opening them chests for items.

I have yet to see anything up the DPS on a scale even close to the naturally increasing difficulty scale?

If the challenge is surviving boredom in a game that requires 50,000 bullets to kill a regular mob, I'll stay non gud if it's all the same (making mobs taking millions of shots to kill != skill challenge)

Get better items. You'd be amazed how far a few syringes, crit glasses, and explodey sticks go. You should know this if you've played beyond the first loop
Honestly, the player's DPS scales too well. Eventually you'll have such high DPS you instantly kill bosses the moment they spawn, and it becomes a game of 'spam everywhere without a care but don't get hit by that blazing titan'

yeah that's what I'm after - in the first game too. Had a half dozen playthroughs on ror1 without seeing anything powerful or even close to - and so far finding the same in ror2. Opening all chests, etc. Just wanted to check if that's the core gameplay or if you can actually get some fun combos a la binding of isaac.

You have played it for 0.5 hours overall. Seriously? It has cap difficulty named HAHAHAHAHAHA(.....) and at this difficulty you will proceed in full game. So far I had my Robot character built like immortal. Some shrooms, some other things for regen, lots of damage and I'm clearing maps in no time no swet. Play the game first then judge it. If roguelike games - not your genre - just pass them games like this and stop whining.

Oh there are some fun combos... and some genuinely insane ones. Things stack infinitely (with very few exceptions) so you can get some gamebreaking combos going if that's your thing

Ya just gotta get used to the time management. Keep an eye out for 3-item shops/printers, activate every shrine of the mountain/combat shrine, get a fungus/healing item early so you can spam the HP shrines, and memorize the better chest spots so you have a better chance at getting reds. The guaranteed legendary chest in the caverns can be worth saving up for, get a good legendary item and you'll start growing incredibly.

The first game had that issue too. The stock items you start with are not very damage-increasing. You need to unlock a few challenges to open up the good stuff.

My friends and I have a blast with this one knowing it'll get crazy in the end-game. The pure insanity in attempting to survive is what gives us that rush. Maybe it doesn't give you that same kick. Not every game is for everyone, but I'm glad you've at least given it a chance.

You just need to play longer. You're not going to instantly see crazy combos in a single 5 minute run. Once you've got movement and positioning down and you get your first 60m Drizzle run, you'll notice a huge difference between early, mid and late game.

Early= Basics and Getting to Know your Characters' Cooldowns
Mid= Experiencing some power and speed with increased mob difficulty
Late= Somewhat Chaotic with enough items to make you feel like a god, with chunky elites

There's only a handful of items that provide a no-frills DPS boost. Almost every damage-output-increasing item is proc on-hit or proc on-kill.

For example, the Sticky Bomb item gives all your hits a 5% chance to drop a bomb that does 250% damage. Having five of these items (which isn't unfeasible since it's a Common one) means you'll have a 15% chance to drop a bomb that does a whopping 1250% damage.

Unlike Isaac where most items contribute to DPS in some way, Risk of Rain has a lot of purely defensive and mobility-boosting items. If the game tosses you a lot of these and no offensive items, your run can slow to a crawl. Try to make the best of a bad situation or die and try again.

Also as others are saying, you're not gonna see crazy stuff in a 10 minute run.
