Preon Accumulator

So I've unlocked the preon accumulator by making it to the box on time, and later in that same run I was getting it as a random drop. But do I always have to get it from the box first in order to get it as a random drop for later runs?

Opening the box unlocks the item and adds it to the permanent item pool.
