Artificer has a huge lack of mobility/dodge, but makes up ALOT in damage.
Lack of range of the Merc doesn't compare to the Dps output like the Artificer has.
Engineer Grenade attack does nill damage compared to other classes, and only the turrets are viable(and boring).
Haven't seen a single person with higher DPS or kills as either one.
If you believe otherwise post proof.
DPS doesnt rly matter... its not hard to do enough damage.
Are you for real?
The grenades deal a lot of damage and you can charge up 8 of them at once. This is perfect for groups of enemies that will all be hit by the explosions.
All of the buffs that Engineer gets is also given to the turrets. So when you reach high enough level your turrets do the work for you.
Engineer has the single highest dmg value in the game and gains 2,8 dmg/lvl instead of 2,4/lvl like ALL OTHER characters, if you would have taken time to read, you would know. This makes him the single most powerful character in terms of raw dmg. His turrets allow him to essentially TRIPLE all his items. He can create cover, as the only character. He has one of the strongest base attacks in the game, if you pick up 2-4 syringes, he charges 8 shots in about 1,5 seconds...
He can use almost any item (unless they are mobility based) with 300% efficiency.
Let's keep it simple, if you think that engineer is a "weak" character, then it's 100% your fault for not using him right and being bad at math.

Merc? Yeah, could hit harder. Then again, he hast the single highest count of mobility of all characters. Can dash up to three times if chained, being invul while doing so, has another ability where he gets invul for an insane long time, starts with double jump and can increase air time with right click ability? Only drawback: main attack is very wonky and sometimes won't chain correctly.
Weak? Damn, no!

Maybe you should stop playing all the characters the same way. RoR2 makes a good job of being a lot less random than RoR, use your head.
Edit: typo
They are incredibly powerful under the right circumstances, while having glaring weaknesses in others.
Get gud before complaining the game is too hard or unbalanced.
This is exactly my problem too, Engineer seems fine when his turrets actually want to work
