Best character for solo
I understand best character is highly subjective to player skill and the items you get but baseline what is the best character to start off with?

Best characters for solo are Huntress and Mercenary. Huntress is a glass cannon, but agile enough to handle anything. Mercenary is basically invincible, but he can die suddenly to certain enemy types. Really, those are the best two character period, Engineer can be pretty good but that's very dependent on specific items.

At the end of the day Mercenary is the way to go.

whomever you're best with, honestly

I used to think Engineer was the best due to his ability to spawn what effectively amounts to 2 extra stationary players, but then I got both my Deicide and Long Road achievements with the Huntress, so I guess I'll say Huntress and Engineer.

yeah huntress and merc are both good solo characters, i'd found REX to be real good too if you know what your doing. engineer is good to a point. a magma worm can mess up everything and an overloading worm WILL mess everything up.

Mul-T Main so my opinions a bit biased, but I find that he's a really good solo character. He's tanky, he has a nailgun that does lots of damage. He has a railgun that pierces enemies. He can go into transport mode and take like 1/4th of a bosses health with it. And his grenades become incredibly OP with the introduction of Gasoline and/or Will-o-the-wisp.

EDITED because I was drunk when I posted this: Look specifically for ATG missiles, Infusions, Ukuleles, Brilliant Behemoths, Sentient Tesla Coils, Titanic Knurls and Unstable Tesla Coils. Boost your ATG missile, Ukulele, Brilliant behemoths and Sentient Meathook proc rate with the clover.

I've noticed that the higher your stack on brilliant behemoth is the better chance you have of hitting something through splash damage, which can activate the meathook, which can activate the ukulele and the tesla coil

His main real issue is that if you don't get any speed items towards the 3rd level, your run is pretty much dead.

Unstable Tesla Coils are to this movie what the Sacrificial Dagger was to RoR1. Getting one suddenly makes every run with every character much more relaxed.
The ability to suddenly deal damage without having to stop and look at the enemies to shoot them is super powerful.
I both wish it was toned down a little, but at the same time this game is so frustrating, it makes me glad it's there in this somewhat overpowered state.

It is very useful, but I wouldn't even call it the best item in the game. It helps very little against bosses and high HP enemies. Great for clearing trash and helping you keep moving, and not a bad bit of extra damage on the bosses, but it doesn't just win you the game. The best item in the long run is the clover.

The one you get best RNG for items with.

I don't think engineer is any more item dependent than huntress. His turrets don't start dying befkre they deal significant damage till like overloading worms. Thing is there's several ways to solve that. Dios so turrets revive, a ton of tank items do they don't die, lots of cdr so you can just replace them, or a ton of damage and you don't even need them. You've got a long time to get one of those before you're really at risk. First overloading worm usually will dpawn stage 12 if you go fast 1-8, and engineer is easy to go fast on.

I will say though after the update huntress got better. Because she had all attacks over 100 damage, so her damage got significantly buffed. I think she might be less item dependent now. But before dhe definitely needed damage items to not fall off at the first elite bosses, where she suddenly can't abuse glaive anymore. Especially the overloading worm that often spawns stage 11-12, cause if she's low on damage she often can't even kill the enemies in the way.

I think merc is the least item dependent to get a run going if you're good enough. But he's the only character I feel I can die on with a good run.

Id say huntress. Hand down and flat out. I see more bad marcs than good. And if ur not built and get the wrong elite your run is over.

Not to mention as a new player running and firing is unpassable.

I always thought engineer was pretty good.
Aside from the stuff said about him above, I'd like to add on he's got pretty dang good movement.
No, he doesn't move faster, and his utility doesn't help him get around. However, he can basically sprint nonstop while still dishing out damage, since he can drop a turret and then just be on his way for most of the first loop.
It's like being able to sprint and attack with huntress, but he's better at it than her. Huntress has to be running with enemies in scope of 45-ish degrees of her to attack them. Engineer can do pretty much whatever he wants.

In a nutshell, Engy helps you get more items in less time and get past the difficulty bump long enough for you to become OP.

That said, I don't really play Engy anymore. I found him too easy, but maybe the decrease to his turret damage fixed that.

I'd say REX has pretty good solo potential, all he really needs is soldier drugs and he's almost unkillable unless swarmed. All my solo runs with him went for 2 hours before obliterating myself.
i would say commando , its very streighforward character

Shots fast , has one of highest proc's , has decent mobility skill who lets you climb walls (takes practice) or escape threats , has stun skill who helps and pierce

What else you may want?

Reason i like it the most he is simple and very streighforward character , does not need to "be played in very specific way" like others

who i find nice if you play this game every now and then

i tried engineer but sometimes i forgot that stopping for 1 seconds is death
