Is there a point to play the first Risk of Rain?

Dumb question I know, I was new to it and I am loving Risk of Rain 2 right now for the art style, looking at the first one and it does look nice but its more of a 2D look it seems. Am I missing much from the first game and should potentially play it? Or stick to Risk of Rain 2?

The lore for some returning items has changed(seemingly to show that RoR2 takes place some time after RoR1), and there was a different roster(commando, huntress, engineer, and mercenary are the only returning characters so far). It was also a much more deliberate game; you couldn't move while shooting, most attacks were purely horizontal, etc. So unless you want a slower, more strategic RoR experience, or just want to get some more lore on the universe, I would say no. Your free to skip RoR1 as long as they don't bring up that game's ending without a recap in this one.

I really enjoyed RoR1. If you're a fan of side scrollers and rogue-likes, it is still a great game to play. I would recommend it even with RoR2 released.

RoR1 is $3 right now. I got it, and I prefer it over RoR2. One thing I'd say, though, unless you are using a controller, I recommend rebinding your controls.

The 2D is played totally differently.
It is also a complete game with a lot more characters, maps, enemies and items.

the one for the moment is 10000% more depth many characters many many more objects , enemies bosses , game modifiers and the gameplay is realy cool it is more simplist in a sense since it is in 2 d ( not realy aiming ) for now i prefer the one ... ACRID , chief <3

Pick it up and try it if you can. You're able to refund if you don't like it.

Will you miss out on anything if you don't play the first game? If you're interested in the lore, yes. You also get to miss out on the pain of waiting for characters from the first game to be added. Lucky you.

RoR 1 is completely different from RoR 2. I also think it's an easier game than the 2, for a few different reasons.

But it's still a great game. I think I enjoy it more than the 2 personally.


The only thing that bugs me the hell out is the stuck bug. Past the 100-200min mark, your chances of getting stuck inside a platform can get very high. In fact, all my last run ended up like this. It's very frustrating if you intend to play for a very long run (which is how I play it).

Risk of Rain 1 is a must play if you enjoy rogue games imo
It has ''more'' content too since it has an actual loop, more items, more characters, more levels, secret levels, a final boss etc.

Once ror 2 has it's 1.0 release next year then i no doubt would say RoR2 is the superior product but you have more replayablitiy in the first than the second right now for sure

Yeah that's one of my favorite parts. It really brings out the isolation feeling.

Risk of Rain 1 is currently a more complete game. It has a definite end goal instead of endlessly looping on a run. For the most part things are pretty balanced overall. I would absolutely recommend it on its own merits.
