Start with DMC 1, 3 or 4, as they are the best in the series. Avoid 2 and 5 as a first.
DMC 2 Doesn't feel like any of the other games in the series, and 5 is like a slightly less good DMC 3 and 4.
this is terrible advice, dmc4 is awful in it's second half and it has the most frustrating enemies out of every dmc game, You start with dmc3 or dmc5. starting with dmc1 isn't recommended because it's an outdated game and only people who like the og resident evil might enjoy it. Other than that skip dmc2 as it's not worth it.
If you straight up want to start playing the one with the best gameplay and pacing in the series, look no further than DMC4, its second half greatly compliments the first half perfectly by bringing new mechanics to the table without ruining the satisfying gameplay, and it certainly doesn't insert a third character whose gameplay feels out of place, heck, DMC4's combat mechanics are so good that they repurposed them for DMC5, and if you're worried about annoying enemies, there is only one in the entire game of DMC4; the Chimera Assault that is aptly named for its relentless assault on your sanity as you try to S rank ♥♥♥♥ on the higher difficulties.
Again terrible advice, most people nowadays won't enjoy dmc1 and they'll give up on the series before they try the better titles. Dmc2 should always be skipped there's countless people who agree it's a terrible game and a terrible sequel to the first game. Besides the story chronologically goes as 3,1,2,4,5 not only should you start with dmc3 because it's the beginning of the story but also the first game to be a fleshed out game with it's mechanics. I have no idea if you're trolling or something but dmc4 is awful, chimeras destroy combos which is frustrating, frosts are straight up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to fight, the blitz legit cannot be taken down with melee. Dmc4 does NOT have a complimentary second half all it does is make you backtrack to fight all the enemies and bosses as dante which were designed for nero, it has a "puzzle" that's just a board game repurposed to waste time near the end for a boss rush. Not only that it has implemented a second currency "proud souls" that can't be used for anything aside of character upgrades which makes them obsolete once you get every upgrade. The game also for some reason has lady in a fanservice outfit for no reason.
Play the game only on normal and easy and you'll be missing out, instead, take the challenge, prevail, and you'll see how satisfying it can be.
Did you play DMC4 thoroughly?
Frosts are easy to deal with if you can dodge and jump, and as for the chimeras, the ones that are problematic are those with the plant thingy on them which can disrupt combos due to their lack of telegraphing and unpredictability, and even then you can still find plenty of tricks you can pull off to stylishly beat these guys without getting close to them, though i get that they are annoying and i greatly dislike them. The Blitz can be melee'd after dealing damage to it with your guns, after which you can either use devil bringer on them as Nero, or just real impact the ♥♥♥♥ out of them as Dante for an easy win.
There is no boss in DMC4 that is strictly designed around Nero in mind in such a way that it becomes broken when you fight them as Dante, which means that you can effortlessly defeat every boss previously fought as Nero if you know what you're doing, hence why the second half is complementary, the game makes you fight all of the previous enemies and bosses as a new character with a different playset, and contrary to DMC5, this character's gameplay is engaging, rather than staying on the sidelines while having your minions fight on your behalf. Honestly it's one of the most masterful reusing of previously used assets in any game. Lastly, DMC3 had a boss rush near the end, so you're now only cherrypicking reasons to hate DMC4, and these "puzzles" that i imagine you're not a fan of are what make the levels interesting. Gotta have set pieces to make missions memorable, you can't have every level be getting from point A to point B without anything in between or else the level design becomes boring. If you're strictly in for the amazing combat, then you can play bloody palace once you've cleared the game, no annoying puzzles there whatsoever. I'll have my corny ass riddles and weird puzzles from the first 4 games, that ♥♥♥♥ has soul and i'm here to lap it up.
This is getting long.
-i did not mention difficulty of dmc1 as a detriment, the game is clunky and old and it shows through it's gameplay.
-Chimeras are the little creatures that latch onto other enemies to give them unpredictable attacks which is a pain in the ass
-I forgot the blitz can be shot out of it's lightning to be damaged by melee but that's a very very linear way of talking them out in a game where you should find different tricks to take down enemies
-You're bashing V without mentioning other faults dmc5 has, which are the enemy encounters
-No re-read what i said, i said dmc4 had a useless puzzle as it's bossrush that does absolutely nothing if you're over the age of 4, it's just pointless, it takes away time unlike in dmc3 where you had to walk up to the boss you wanted to fight in the bossrush. It's not even a puzzle it's just rolling dice which isn't random at all and it's memorable for being bad not good
and as much as I'm hating dmc4 rn i still plan on beating every diff in the game, I've done it in dmc3 and dmc2 I'm halfway through hard in dmc1 and I'm on SoS in dmc5. I love the characters and the games themselves but I won't sit here and glaze them when they're imperfect.
DMC 3 feels more outdated than 1, and i played 1 ALOT. 3 looks cheaper even.

Nope, that's good advice.
DMC1 has the best level design and atmosphere easily, hands down. Not a single other game in the series came close to it. Precisely because it is similar to Resident Evil.
DMC2 should be skipped, or saved for last as a curious dive experiment and nothing else.
DMC3 is one of the best games ever made, solid combat, decent levels, amazing soundtrack.
DMC4:SE has the most in-depth combat design, the level design lacks in variety, but no other game in the series can hold a candle to the combat. That especially goes for Dante.
DMC5/SE combines the best from DMC3 and DMC4. Solid level design, amazing combat equally to DMC4, huge replayability and a banger OST.
Good games never go out of date. Ever. DMC1 will never be outdated because of that. It can't be outdated because it was built with Resident Evil design decisions in mind.
And Resident Evil 1-3 have never gone out of date even to this day. They are still crisp and clean with superb controls, good level design, decent difficulty and 10 out of 10 replayability with speedrunning. DMC1 is the only good game in the series to speedrun.
There are old games that aged poorly, but DMC1 isn't one of them.
BUT.
I will agree with you that DMC3 and DMC5 are the best starting points for the franchise, then going DMC4 and DMC1 skipping DMC2 straight out and saving DmC:DMC for last (Preferably the Definitive Edition for PS4).
Both DMC1 can DmC:DMC can be isolated and enjoyed in their own bubble.
