Also, I don't share the opinion saying that remakes "dilute" an original's "memory" and "legacy". What does that even mean? Those are video games.
I'm fine with remakes.
I mean, I don't consider remakes to be "replacements" in any shape or form to an original. It's merely a new vision, a new idea, a new game inspired by another game. Not a replacement.
And the idea of getting another game based on a game I love is... quite exciting actually. Either I enjoy the new game, I have fun, I play it alongside the original, and everything is fine, or I don't like the remake, and I stick to the original. Case closed.
The only thing that matters for a sequel, a prequel, a reboot, a soft reboot, a remake or a new ip is to be entertaining. If the game is great, and people are enjoying it, what's the issue?
With people like you we wouldn't have gotten DooM 2016 because it's like a "slap in the face" to the original DooM 93 and its "legacy" (I read that on these forums), and considering how great DooM 2016 is, that would've been such a shame for it to not exist. Granted that it is more akin to a soft reboot, but this is the same idea, same energy, same essence. I enjoy playing DooM 1 and 2 as much as DooM 2016 and Eternal.
Same goes for the Yakuza Kiwami games, Resident Evil REmake and the more recent Resident Evil Remakes, Dead Space, System Shock, DuckTales, Star Ocean 2 R, Black Mesa, Mafia 1,Link’s Awakening (and the non official DX HD), HeartGold/SoulSilver,... Those are all great games based on games I love.
All that truly matters to me the end, is to have fun with games I love. Why would I care if they are considered remakes or not?

The fact that F2Ps make around 80% of the global video game market revenue is an issue, because it invites publishers ,who's sole job is to find ways to make money based on consumer's habits, to use similar economic models in paid games. That's why we end up getting MTX, Lootboxes and whatnot in games we already buy at full price. Sometimes completely destroying game balance in profit of continuous revenue.
In comparison, getting a proper remake of DMC 1, would actually be a great thing, not only because it would show that Capcom is still interested in making DMC games, but also give them the opportunity to polish that very rough gem. Also, chances are Kamiya could/would do it.
Now to think of it, considering the troubled development history of most games in the DMC franchise, talking about "memory" and "legacy" is a little far fetched.
Replayed the 3 dmc games after a while.
dmc 1 only nostalgia.
dmc 2 is still the worst game capcom ever made
dmc 3 storywise great/gameplaywise nice/lvl and backtracking lame as hell
Capcom should do a remake.Especially after the marvelous dmc 5.
Dont forget the awesome RE remakes.
Would love a trilogy remake at its best
Also being all "If you are in favor you are dead wrong" is kinda rude and closed minded. And dividing. We all slay together.
But the real reason why corporations are obsessed with remakes nowadays is because they ran out of ideas, their new stuff is usually not well received, their current games are not as good as what they used to do, so the safe thing to do is to essentially resell you the stuff that you liked in the past.
Remakes are fine I guess for people that never tried the originals, it might even make them crave for more and eventually check out the originals too, but I personally don't remember ever liking a remake as much, or more than the original creation, except for Resident Evil 1 remake.
Even so, saying that remakes "bury and dilute the OG's memory and legacy" is just ridiculous. There's so many examples of both versions of a game having their own separate legacies. Resident Evil 4 remake is great, but it's not like the original was wiped off the face of the earth.
The whole point of remaking a game for a publisher is to make even more money with an already successful game that can be refreshed/updated enough to justify a buy over the original version.
Simply put: there is no point in remaking DMC2 because it has near to zero marketing value for a Capcom.
Also, considering the complete trainwreck that was DMC2's development, being a patchwork or different ideas made for another game and developed by a team that had no clue what DMC was or what they were supposed to do, it hardly makes any sense bearing the name "Devil May Cry".
To be clear, they would have to change so many things in DMC2 to make a good enough game to be even worth it, that not only it wouldn't make sense calling it DMC2, but it could dramatically hurt its sales potential to just use that name. Lol, I even know some people who get their ptsd triggered just by hearing this title.
In the end, it would actually make more sense developing a new game using some of the ideas that work in DMC2. Funny thing though, that's what Capcom did. Some DMC3 music tracks actually come from DMC2, but remixed, like Vergil's theme. The Majin form concept was reused later in DMC5 for exemple.
TL;DR
The only ones asking for a DMC2 remake have no clue what DMC2 really is, from a development standpoint.
It's not a game that "didn't work", it's a game that doesn't make any sense from the very beginning of its development, and till its very end. There is nothing to fix let alone remake.
Capcom can take a few ideas here and there from DMC2 to create a completely new game out of it, but that's pretty much it. And that's what they did.
Also, the purpose of a remake is to capitalize on a game's success to make a lot of money. From a publisher standpoint, there is no incentive to remake a game like DMC2.
I get what you are saying but; Lucia is mentioned in the DMC5 prequel novel, so she is confirmed to indeed be a part of the continuity. Would heavy changes have to be made? For sure, no one denying that.
The entire DMC community would buy a DMC2 remake. We all would like to forget that the original even exists. Also, while the game sucks; Dante's outfit and demon form are among the favorites for a lot of fans, No one hates Lucia and would love to see here make a return. And honestly, the Despair Embodied is a cool fight. It would "port" very well. To fight DB with style-switching Dante would be absolutely peak.
Also, literally any improvement in DMC2 would be better an incentive to buy
Concepts from DMC2 being used in other game, yeah. Aspects of the Original DMC anime also (for better or worse) also made into the games. Aspects of the DmC reboot also made it into the remade series. DMC2 concepts being used are nothing special and no reason to not remake the game.
Most remakes are criticized because "The game didnt need one". This particular remake wouldnt have that criticism. We would embrace that remake with no ill will or grumpiness. (other than those crying about not getting DMC6, who are likely also gonna buy a DMC2Remake)
The entire DMC community would buy any new DMC game or any DMC remake. In other words, the community is eager to play other DMC games, not just DMC2.
And for Capcom, if they have to choose from remaking DMC1, DMC2, DMC3, DMC4, developing a DMC0 or DMC6, you can be sure remaking DMC2 would be their very last choice. And that also goes for nearly everyone in the DMC community. If we were assured to get new DMC games (one every two years for example) I wouldn't mind DMC2 to be somewhat reimagined at some point. But considering how the community is starving from good DMC games...?
A DMC2 remake would also be my (dead) last wish if Capcom were to announce a new DMC game.
Also, like I said, even if they were to remake DMC2 and keep its main story points, Lucia and boss concepts that were interesting, there would be so much to change to make any sense calling it DMC2.
I'm not convinced just recreating DMC2 with the RE Engine would sell enough to justify doing it.
Well, my point is that with DMC2 there isn't much they can do aside from recycling the few ideas that worked. And it's not just the Majin form of DMC2 that got into DMC5, quite a few plot points did too. The whole city demonizing more and more, Dante traveling on a motorbike, Arius in demon form being quite similar to Urizen, the fact they both are sit down in the first encounter... (okay that one is a bit far fetched, I agree...)
I mean, in a way, DMC5 is already kinda remaking a good part of DMC2, while being a better and more interesting game.
A publisher cares much more about money than grumpy people's opinions. Case in point: you can find plenty of people spitting in the face of the recent RE remakes, yet considering how successful they are, Capcom ain't stopping remaking RE games anytime soon.
Also, while DMC2 wouldn't have that particular criticism, it could have plenty more. "Why did they choose to remake DMC2 in place of making a new game in the series? Why did they called it DMC2, it is so different from DMC2 that the name doesn't fit. or Why didn't they remake DMC1 or DMC3 instead? Those are good games and I would love to see them under a new light."
On the contrary, remaking DMC1?
DMC1 is a rough gem. Its gameplay aged like milk and makes it awkward to play after... well... any other game in the series (aside from DMC2).
The story is very nice and the setting is great.
A remake under the RE engine with modern gameplay would make it shine so good.
The same just can't be said with DMC2. Either they would be remaking a trainwreck or, it simply wouldn't make sense calling it DMC2.
To be perfectly clear: I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a DMC2 remake, I'm just saying that remaking DMC2 makes less sense than doing anything else.
While I do have my sympathies for DMC2, and I often find myself wanting to play it again (but not actually playing it), the idea of "DMC2 remake", one way or another, don't really make sense for me.
Actually, I'm pretty convinced that DMC2 is the reason Capcom is getting cold feet when they think about remaking the DMC games.
They just have no clue what to do with it.
