Yeah I've tried that but as soon as he goes "off script" he ruins me. There's a few that say "If you do this, Nelo will always do X" but he absolutely does not.
Yeah he goes off script if you mess up the timings, the combo or he goes out of bounds and has to walk back.

To add onto this; you can opt to make your final hit in the 5-hit slash combo a Round Trip if you hold "Y / Triangle" on the third hit. You charge it up while he does his animation for teleporting away, and your sword will immediately home in on him once he reappears. You can get him trapped in a pretty brutal stunlock, since he'll immediately start getting diced up by Round Trip; even when he starts blocking it, you can just run behind him and do the exact same thing again.
Sometimes he'll run off to either end of the arena to do summon swords attacks, but if he's close enough, Round Trip will still home in on him after the teleport and knock him out of it, often quicker than he can even summon any swords. He can break free from this cycle, so it won't be able to carry you through his entire health bar, but you can definitely make consistent steady progress through the fight with it.
