If you'd like to know the locations of all the free items and hidden stuff then you can find it here. https://devils-lair.org/dmc1.php
I'm also terrible at this game, so I'll try to find any item I can to help, thanks!
If you want a tip to help you out, you should know that when you pause with the select button you can save the game mid mission, and this will Save how many orbs you've collected. You can save the game before every boss attempt, so that on your way though a level you can collect orbs on the way to your next attempt, and keep making some progress that way, the extra orbs you collect from beating enemies can be used to buy more things to help you out, like Blue orbs to extend your health to give you a better fighting chance.
Now it's important to know Saving the game mid mission will also save how long you've been in that mission, so you will get a worse end mission ranking due to taking too long to beat the mission, but I wouldn't worry about trying to get good ranks until you're much more familiar with the entire game.
I'm guessing a little here, but given DMC1 is my favourite game, and I know it like the back of my hand. I think I'm on the right track
Red Room = the room you are currently in.
Blue Rooms = Rooms from previous missions that are unnecessary to enter.
Gray Rooms = Room you need to explore to reach the end of the mission.
Green Room = The last room of the mission/ or location of current Objective
Gold Glow = Objective
Yep You hit either L2/Left Trigger, or you can shift to it in the menu.
DMC1 is so straight forward that use of the map is not required, and frankly the controls for the map are harder to wrap your head around then controlling anything else in DMC1.
DMC2,DMC3, and DMC4 also have maps, but it's easy to forget that they do.
