Regarding why the game is bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcvw1E0Mcac
They made Dante more quite and stoic in DMC2 since they thought that might have been seen as cooler.
DMC2 had nobody who worked on DMC1 make it, and DMC1 was the first game of it's kind so that's what made making DMC2 so difficult for the new team, until Itsuno became the director in the last few months and made an actual shippable product.
DMC2 has allot of flaws, and It's no secret why most people don't like the game, but at the same time people will just stand away form enemies and shoot them to death, Yeah this will let you beat the game, but you can actually put in some effort too, I found it makes the game more fun, but most people don't bother to put effort into playing DMC2, when they could just play one of the other games instead.
Here's some of my gameplay

The second character Lucia who's actually the main character, is actually fun to play ass too, shes allot quicker then Dante. but most people ignore the 2nd campaign entirely as well
