Thanks man!!!
How long does it take to get things done?
I can't wait for DMC1 because HQ texture made me confuse like. Is this game came from ps3 generation?
All games are coming from the PS2. They haven't changed much, Just upped the resolution.
yes I already know that. But the high quality of texture can improve game even though the 3d model is not good enough comparing to new game generation.
The Original PS2 textures are present in the HD Collection as well. So not much work has been put into it. If we look at games Like Final Fantasy 10 or 12. Those games see's big improvements, because they put love and care into the game, but without destroying the original art style.
DMC HD collection effort is pretty minimal at best. DMC1 has a lot of missing effects, ugly textures and bugs etc, that weren't present in the original Version. Instead they just used the X360 version and broke it even further. The Team that did the port, did a lazy job.
I'm actually playing DMC 3 so I will be able to enjoy that right now.
I really hope DMC 1 could have the same treatment.
The only detail is that it lost the red glow effect during transitions between zones, when you take a door for exemple.
Thanks!!
Some people are upset about the changes on some textures , but its normal.
Everybody has different opinions and in some cases, purist can be a little stupid sometimes XD.
For example, some people critics the new floor texture on lady cutscenes on stage 9:
https://imgsli.com/MTAyNjQ
saying that the new texture is generic, but when you see how the original texture looked, how cant you aprecciate the improvement? XD
Im already working on dmc 1 at the moment, i was going to do a star wars episode 1: racer texture pack, but there is a team of people already doing that
Yes textures are sometimes a bit different than the original material, but the quality is by far superior and artistically still coherent, I'd never go back to the previous look lol
Can't wait for DMC1 !
Keep up the good work !
8 months XD, Its a little embarrasing that it take me so much time but, i learn a lot in the process, i started barebones knowledge-wise and the process of porting textures was VERY DENSE.
Special K has the ability of dump textures while you play, but in this case it doesnt care because i cant use the textures of the hd collection, i needed the original textures without modifications, so i wanted to use the original pc version for that, but it give me errors everytime i wanted to use texmod or Umod to extract the textures.
So i had to extract the textures of the ps2 version using texmod (playing the game on pcsx2 emulator).
The thing is that texmod only reads and let you extract the textures of the room you are, and it doesnt dump textures automatically like special k, so you need to play all the game ,room by room and in texmod you press the keys plus and minus to see every texture of the room you are and extract it ONE BY ONE.
And texmod a lot of times extracted the textures corrupted, so you had to play the stage again , see which textures was missing or corrupted, its was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dense, because sometimes the textures must be visible on the screen entilrely (so tecmod can extract it) , but if for example, the texture was a texture that belongs to the roof of the room, texmod only load the half of the texture, and you have to jump like a stupid to texmod being able to finally read the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ texture entirely XD.
There was two more problems , if you extract the textures of the ps2 version with texmod, the colors were all messed up, so you need to modify the reds and blue , and invert them to get the texture to look as it should. and fix the transparency too because it was messes up too.
And complete all the hd collection as well so Special K could dump the hd collection textures to know the hash of the texture (hash is the name of the extracted textures, that name its like the adress of the texture into the game, so the injecting program will know from where it is and apply it to the place-room it belongs)
In my texture pack there are like 1800 textures if im not mistaken. But the ps2 versions hash
and the HD collection Hash were different, so manually i had to change the name of every texture to the hash of the HD coillection, one by one.
Then every texture was upscaled with gigapixel and then , with "denoise ai" reduced the noise of the texture.
And with gimp 2.8 modified the brightness , contrast, blur, gaussian blur, sharpening, transparency, etc of a lot of textures.
Some textures like the new floor at the start of mission 5 was a nightmare, because its like a puzzle the way the texture connects with itself when its rendered. and you have to make it look good, was one of the worst textures in terms of how much work i had to do to implement it.
And other textures like the gun of dante take me like a week , hours per day to make it look good, because first, i needed to find a picture of a gun thhat i could use as the new texture.
And then adapt it to how the texture was , i remember the process and my head hurts XD.
Im not professional , not even amateur, but i made this with all the ilussion and good will that i have as a fan to improve the game, for better or worse considering the results XD
The short answer would be that, you had to make double work with this game because you needed to extract the textures from other version, all with different Hash and all the textures were messed up in terms of color and transparency and had to be fixed one by one.
Because if it wasnt for that , the process would be a lot faster, i could have used the hd collection textures and done, but it wasnt the case, and had to waste a LOT of time only in extract the texture with the correct hash, and start to upscale it.
Perhaps i could had finish in 4 or 5 moths instead of 8
But some of the new textures took a lot of time as well, dmc 1 will be faster because i know how to organize everything and how to do it now. And i will make less new entirely textures.
Despite a few texture changes that don't fit very well in some cases the only downside I see from your mod is the absense of fog at least in most of the comparison screenshots, any reason for that?
You realize that Double Helix had to backwards engineer the source code on all of the games before they could even start work on the HD collection? You see, back in the day, most devs actually deleted the source code once they were done w/ a game.
Capcom contracted Double Helix to do the HD Collection, then when Capcom was asked for the source code, replied "Uh, well you're on your own on that one".
So Double Helix had to go buy copies of the old PS2 games, rip the roms, then backwards engineer the source code before they could even start. They actually put in quite a bit of effort considering what was originally asked of them.
