DMC2 is... mercifully short, I guess. I believe it's 13 missions for Dante and 9 for Lucia. It's not a good game, but DMC5 takes place after the entire series, so I guess it's worth playing. If there's any game to skip, it's probably this one.
It took me a few tries to get into the game as well, but arguably 1 is the best in the series.
What you'll find with 2 is that "chore" is a perfect definition. Guns have been buffed to oblivion and the combo system has been messed with in ways that don't make sense. Many of the bosses are pretty much ranged-only, and it's an entire game based around holding/mashing X.
A couple of tips: Learn the critical hit system. It allows you to insta kill specific enemy types ( http://devils-lair.org/dmc1enemies.php )
Buy vortex and meteor as soon as possible. Vortex 2 especially offers iframes for almost its entire duration and Metor deals a ton of damage when charged.
Cancel the reload animations of the grenade launcher with rolls. That way you can easily build up a load of DT from a safe distance
It's more like 16 missions for Dante and 13 for Lucia, but I can agree some mission are just a boss fight.
Beat DMC1 as it's a really a good game and absolutely worth the time. Skip 2 if you want to, it's the worst game in the series and if you care about plot, DMC2's does not matter for the games after.
