It got bashed when it first released because it was a disapointement after a great first episode that was still very present in people's minds (DMC2 was released 14 months after DMC1).
It was lacking what made DMC1 great: a good story, an outstanding atmosphere, a great soundtrack, and inspired artistic direction and level design.
And the gameplay hasn't really improved compared to the first one, besides one or two things, like running of the walls and being able to shoot without aiming.
However, it is still a very unique game, and was experiencing some ideas that made it very different from DMC1, like a wider variety of locations and a customisable Devil Trigger.
Even if its atmosphere is not as great as DMC1, I still love it, and those creepy streets combined with the weird sountrack give me strange feelings (in a good way).
A lot of people prefrer ignore it or make jokes about "how bad it is", but it's nowhere near as bad as some imply it, it clearly doesn't deserve all that hate (for me).
Disapointing is the word. Yes, it could have been way better, but it's still an okay game that is one a kind.
And having 3 playable characters was a great idea for the series.
The game's main problems are the environments are too big and empty, and you know they are since they gave you an ability just for running faster.
Enemies are bosses also rather forgettable since this game lacks the personality of the First game bosses just show up you kill them and you leave, no banter no fun.
I still enjoy DMC2 but it's flaws are very clear.
-a proper dodge (the only DMC to have one)
-Hardcore Parkour/ shooting down with Pistols mid air
-Dual Wield Ebony with Shotgun
-introduces Rebelion
-2 other swords
-Dual MP5's/Stinger
-Playable Trish to replace Luca
-DMC1 Costume
-Flying Heart
-Nightmare
-DEMON TANK
Cons
-The auto lock on even for melee ruins the combat
-Missing Vergil
-Missing DMC1 weapons
-Missing DMC1 enemies (replaced with goats)...
-Missions not one big interconnected area like DMC1 Castle
-Deisel
if you think DMC2 is too easy don't use items or dodge then and it will be harder than other DMC games.
That said, i don't think it necessarily fits a DMC game. The first one had way better level design from a gameplay perspective and the whole thing just felt more coherent. I also really dislike the balance in gameplay of DMC2, pistols/ranged weapons in DT are ridiculous powerful and can shred bosses to pieces in seconds instead of just working as cool ways to extend your combo like in DMC3 and 4. I also dislike old Dante to such a degree that i actually prefer the dmcdmc Donte more.
All in all, a pretty average hack & slash. Doesn't necessarily deserve all the hate that it gets but it's also a bit difficult to stand out when the two games next to you have a metascore in mid 90s.
I adore it.

Reminds me of Shadow Man.
First off, let me just say, the art style and darkness this game has is quite unique for today. The game is incredibly creepy at times and the atmosphere is mesmerizing. In hindsight I'd like to say it reminds me of a lot of PS1-era games that came out that time. Dialogue is scarce and half the time you don't know what's going on.
Now to gameplay. The maps are designed in an open manner, which is unlike any other DMC title where paths are usually very narrow and straight-forward. As someone who enjoys to explore maps for secrets, this is done nicely. On the other hand, exploring and openness of the map led me to understand that it's only there to extend game time artificially. You can run around for a minute and at the end of the rainbow all you're going to find is a single red orb.
So I tried a different approach. At some point in a mission there are three doorways, I decided to take the one which is the most far away and low and behold, it led exactly where I needed to go. But I'm going to quick here so let's talk about Combat.
Combat is clunky, attacks often miss despite that you are autolocked to enemies at random (Probably auto-lock to the closest one) and the autolock is incredibly awful because the camera angles, 90 % of the time, do not allow you to see incoming enemies. Just like I've spent a lot of times fighting enemies off-screen which I couldn't see, boss fights were the same. I took an insane amount of screenshots of boss fights like the Infested Helicopter where I did not nothing apart from standing in the position I spawned and shooting it with whatever gun was available until they were defeated. This isn't the only problem with lock-on. In a lot of areas you have to hit buttons several times in order to proceed. That's a problem when enemies are around (and it was like that every single time) because even when you try to hit the button, Dante moves towards his locked-on target making the buttons impossible to hit 7-8 times which you would have to as Dante simply keeps moving towards enemies off-screen and misses the mechanic ergo the game forces you to take a useless fight. Ok, so, a few more gun shots, don't even have to move away, you don't get to fight but when it's finally over, a few more enemies may spawn or not, you get to finish it.
If the enemies were appealing or if the fight-mechanics weren't this bad, I wouldn't mind. But already in the second mission you have a wild diversity of enemies who you just don't care about because neither of them are unique nor do they have special abilities and they are all prone to get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ by your guns. The camera-angles really don't help, at times you don't know what is going on, where you are getting attacked from or where the next point of interest might be. There was a mission to open the hellmouth to enter it and in order to do so you were on a Ring-like map, a street, where you had to push 4 of those buttons I mentioned above. I found them at random when I explored. Because I double-jumped in the Air I managed to find the first-one at random. The camera angle at when I entered the area didn't allow me to see it, it was hanging in mid-air. What the camera focused on was the enemies on the ground below. Hadn't I jumped I would've missed it. Same goes for another button on that map, I found it by randomly trying to jump over a gap in a wall and low and behold, next button.
I really can't stress enough how atmospheric and immersing this game can be, some of the textures on certain maps are great. Like how hell looks like a five-star Hotel. All-in All this game feels a lot more like Resident Evil than Devil May Cry and it's possible that may be what Capcom was aiming for at the time. But really bad combat mechanics, a very confusing camera AI, heartless boss fight mechanics and a very strange story script is what makes this an incredibly crappy Devil May Cry game but an immersive and creepy, atmospheric adventure title.
There are combos I only learn how to do just now, and i'v already beat this game on DMD on PS2 and 360. I played though the game as Dante 6 times and didn't know how to do them.
During the infested chopper fight your intended to shoot it's missiles out of the air to get a big boost to your devil trigger, to then unleash that on the Eye that is the chopper's weak point, The problem is the camera angle is so bad that 9 outta 10 times you won't see the missiles coming and they'll just hit you before you can shoot them.
1. Story is not progressing at all. It's like if the game was not intended to have one, you've got the object to take down some villain, that's it.
2. Doors. In all other dmcs you can interract with any door and you would either get an explanation why you can't enter it like "the door is blocked, you need rusty key", or you would simply enter some room. In this game, you have to guess what you can enter and what not.
3. Empty world, some people say it adds atmosphere, for me it's just boring to run around such large areas from point A to point B where nothing happens.
4. Nothing is explained, game just throws you in the world and you have to guess all mechanics on your own.
5. Enemies are way too easy, it's a miracle if you ever go down to even half health bar.
6. Combat is clunky because of auto lock on that I am not sure you can switch to different targets.
7. Weapon upgrades that auto upgrade weapons for a certain amount of souls, in what way I don't know, since there is nothing explained. Buying moves in dmc 1 was better imo, since you could see what you will get afterwards and what will fit your play style.
8. Bosses are way too primitive. There is nothing special about them that differs them from usual demons that you meet on the streets, except for more hp.
9. Devil trigger is way too op. Of course it is supposed to provide you with power boost, but gun shots make any boss simply melt down, besides health regeneration is crazy.
10. Camera angles, sometimes they just irritate.
Can't judge this port yet since still haven't bought it on PC, but playing on ps3
What?
In total, its not good, its not bad, its just... dull i think.

Basicly Dante goes into a new combo when you move the stick, so it would be Y forward Y Y or Y, Y, forward Y, Y ect...
These combos also have different properties in D T. Like Y Y forward Y lets you do Million Stab.
Yeah on Xbox you hold the Right Trigger. and it was R2 on PS2.
