So tell me, what do you mean by "preorder worth it"? If you have any bonus content in mind then no, it isn't. Simply because other than having your game in your library you gain nothing purchasing it right now. If, however, you have overall game quality in mind then I say yes, it is worth it. Mr. [ELYSEE] CHIRAC will tell you that preordering DMC HD Collection for PC is pointless, and he will be right as well.
I can tell you that DMC1 runs very well on my machine, supports Xbox One S controller just fine and after finishing the game once I don't have in my mind a single thing that is bad with this port. If you fiddle with ini file you can go with 4k resolution, framerate issues for 144Hz displays are easly fixed... I play at 1080/60, so all I did was installing the game and play it. Decision is yours to make.
The options menu could be better (it supports 4K, let us use it!), keyboard support sucks, and 144Hz monitors have a speedbug that can be somewhat easily fixed. That's the only complaining I can manage.
I would love to see some of those old prerendered cutscenes get remade in the future, but the in engine scenes look great. At least judging from DMC1HD, I can only give this collection a glowing review.
Out of curiosity: did you play DMC series in the past?
I wouldn't do it chronologicaly. It makes way more sense playing them in release order.
Playing them in chronological order is like watching Christopher Nolan's Memento with all the scenes put in the chronological order, it breaks the movie.
However I suggest that you play the series not chronological order via timeline, but from first to fourth. Switching from 3rd to 1st and from 4th to 2nd may be a little difficult, as new entries have better combat system, story narrative and overall quality.
Don't worry, the story is simple enought to be understood whatever the order you play them.
Playing them in release is more enjoyable too, since the gameplay possibilities get higher along with your skill.
