HD Collection or Emulate
I was wondering what would be better to play the three original DMC games on. HD Collection or Emulator. I'm not planing on pirating this as I plan on buying this game whether I'm emulating or playing the HD Collection.

Even the attrocious original PC port of DMC 3 runs better, mostly because it doesn't require as much as this re-release of games from 2001/05. Not to mention, there are graphical effects like motion blur completely missing from the collection, as well as some bad audio clips.

First, considering emulation is illegal even if you have the originals and the PS2 (and the emulator itself is illegal), you are not really supposed to to it. But hey, it's not like nobody was doing it. To be clear, I'm not judging, and frankly I couldn't, since I often emulate games, it's just that playing the HD collection through steam is a more legal way.

Then, it's more convenient to own the three games on steam than having to boot up your PS2 or even emulate, even more because it has cloud support (even if it's not metionned).

To finish, the PC version support mods such as Style Switcher, where the PS2 games don't, and just for that it makes it worth playing it on PC.

Now, it has indeed a few flaws, such as bad audio loops, and missing graphical effects, but most of the time you wouln't even notice them if you are not a hardcore fan who knows the three games on the tip of your fingers.

Its not illegall at all, when you own the games and the console.
You can play PS2 games by putting the disc inside your drive. You Only needs the bios from the PS2 to play games through an emulator.

You should definitely emulate DMC1 over the HD collection. DMC2 is about the same. DMC3 is harder to emulate well and it's lacking in modding, so all things considered, this HD collection is better for playing DMC3, especially over the previous PC version of that game.

@CHIRAC, emulation isn't illegal. It was established in Sony Entertainment vs. Bleem! that emulators are acceptable so long as they are using custom code and don't provide certain parts of the original console or its games. Essentially, getting them working is all up to you. Taking someone else's BIOS or discs is where it gets illegal. That's assuming we're talking about American law, of course.

On that topic, I'd go with this version for simplicity. A missing blur effect won't kill you, and it's certainly not worth tearing your hair out with an emulator over.

To clarify, legal emulation would mean actually owning the game on disc. As in, the PS2 one. I believe it's a little hard to find now.

Thanks for all the answers. I'm going to emulate these games as soon as I buy this version of the games.

Except that everybody download a BIOS (me too) to emulate games properly. Let's face it, nobody dump their own bios from their PS2.
So yes, it's illegal.
But it's not like you actually risk anything by doing so, companies don't really care if you emulate a system that has been commercialy dead for more than 10 years in you bedroom.

GareldField -> There is no point doing this. Either you decide to emulate or you buy the steam version.
The question here is that is it worth it to buy it or not other the orignals?
Is the "upagrade" compared to the the orignals worth the price?
Depends on you. But if you decide to buy it on steam, play it on steam.
Considering that you got somethig else than a AMD Athlon or Phenom CPU that is.

Its quite easy to take the Bios from the PS2. There's plenty of tutorials on Youtube. And it doesn't require to modify your system in anyway. Its not illegal. If it was, Sony would taken down PCSX2 years ago.

Since I'm going to emulate the games I'm going to buy the games on here so that Capcom still makes money for a game that they made. One of the reasons I want to emulate the games are the better controls. I heard that this version of the game doesn't support mouse control at all. I hate using controllers on any game as I find them uncomfortable. So, I'm going to buy this version but play the PS2 game.

"I hear thart his version of the game doesn't support mouse control at all".
Not just this version. No version support mouse control.
And for DMC1 and 2 it wouln't change much, since you can't control the camera. Even in DMC3 it's pretty limited, and you can control it only in some parts of the game (mostly bosses).
So even if you configure the emulator to be able to use your mouse, it wouldn't be a big help.

You have every right to think so. The thing is that some games are designed for controllers. Like the french saying: "each work as its tool". Wanting to play DMC with a keyboard is like playing Starcraft with a gampad. Not only it doesn't make sense, it's also not built for it.
DMC games are hard games( very hard if you never played them), even with a controller so with a keyboard, it's a true nightmare.

You do as you wish, but don't be suprised if you don't even manage to beat the first three levels.

I've tested these games on mouse and keyboard and they work perfectly fine. Left mouse for sword and right mouse for guns.I got to level 5 on DMC 3. I don't see how this game is only meant for controller. I don't think any game is only meant to be played on controller as I actually beat the first Dark Souls game with mouse and keyboard. I just think mouse and keyboard is better for every game.

Impressive, truly.

Nonetheless I fail to see how an input device designed for office working can be better in every game than another that has been specificaly designed for gaming.

I play all of my games using keyboard and mouse. Plaformers, action, rpg, fps, rts, party, racing, fighting, and any other genre I haven't named. I find controllers relevant anymore as they are very obsolete compared to a keyboard and mouse. Also, if something is specificaly designed to a purpose and it's terrible at it's purpose then it's not good.

I would instantly break my keyboard, if i were try to play these type of games. Some games are meant to be played with a controller. But i give you props for playing everything with a keyboard and mouse.

It’s not because you prefer keyboards and mouses for gaming that controllers are terrible at it. Far from it.
Controllers are way more confortable and ergononomic than keyboards.
