I hope you don't mind I'm a few days late to this but DMC2 has painfully bad sword attacks for dante, you can't cancel out of them and the recovery time after swinging is god awful. stinger is also far downgraded from dmc1 which makes chaining melee combos on enemies without dropping style nearly impossible if you don't spam your guns to move between them

how to make it super easy? spamming pistols. for the whole game just fight everything by spamming your guns from a distance, it's the most boring strategy but it works so effectively. not to mention most enemies can be juggled from the ground just by shooting them

and if you ever just want to give up on a boss, get down to low hp (bar turns red) and DT for the secret "Sin Devil Trigger" and start shooting, you can easily knock out a bosses whole health bar with those attacks

The key to winning in dmc2 is to press the shoot button as fast as possible. If that doesn't work mash even harder. If it still isn't working, press the button at a speed where it feels like your thumb is breaking. This will get you through ANY situation.

If gun isn't enough, use more gun.

As the previous comments suggest, DMC2 is completely different from the other games in the series. Melee attacks are mostly useless and also very slow, and guns are INSANELY strong (Lucia's projectiles not so much).

As Dante, if you just want to get through the game, try to upgrade your rocket launcher as quickly as possible. It is the best weapon you have. The submachine guns are the second most important weapon upgrade I'd say. For swords, I suggest only upgrading your most powerful set.

Here is how to generally play the game:

1) Shoot everything with the rocket launcher if that's reliable, and switch cancel your shots with the submachine guns or handguns to maximize damage. For Lucia, upgrade her daggers. Use Devil Trigger for both characters when needed while spamming ranged attacks.

2) The best way to deal damage to all bosses which let you hit them with melee attacks is to use the Chrono Heart (or sometimes Offense Heart), Quick Heart and the heart of the element the enemy is weak against, use Devil Trigger and spam the Stinger move (Lock-on + Forward + Attack) over and over. That's really the only option you have in this game, so use a guide to find these items.

3) What you have to understand is: This game is also nothing like the other DMC games when it comes to ranks. It's basically impossible to get S-Ranks on most missions on DMD difficulty. I think some people have done it, but I'm not certain. Either way, it requires EXCESSIVE use of consumables. It's impossible to get an all S rank on most missions, especially on DMD. The game wasn't playtested in this regard at all.

So basically: Just spam your most powerful ranged weapon (or SMG if you are facing firebats and similar fast enemies). Spam Devil-triggered Stingers with the appropriate amulet setup (mostly Chrono Heart) to beat bosses you can melee as well as strong normal enemies.

Ignore rank. It's not really possible to S-Rank most missions. If you still want to try, do the opposite of what you do in other DMC games (melee combos for style and ranged attacks occasionally to not lose style): Spam ranged attacks and only occasionally stinger the enemy (or use high-time to lift them), then go back to spamming shots. Stinger and High-Time are the only attacks which build decent style. For bosses, do the Devil Trigger + Stinger spam as explained above and just eat Devil Star after Devil Star to stay in Devil Trigger.

Ultimately, I just suggest watching videos of good players on YouTube.
correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the elemental hearts actually have any rock paper scissors mechanic, i think it's actually like: electric heart gives more attack range, fire heart does more damage, and frost heart slows enemies

I don't know why I typed "weak against", what I meant is the heart most effective against the boss. They only have the effects you mentioned. Ice for example helps against some of the fast bosses even if you're using Chrono Heart while spamming fire Stingers with Chrono Heart equipped is enough for the goats, for example.
