Report a translation problem
Ideally, ctrl-rightclick would pick it up like it does with icons, and maybe open the edit window at the same time? That's the only option I can think of which would fit with the current UI.
As for the text feature currently in the app, it's simple and gets the job done, but as mentioned by Darloth it is lacking.
1. open the program and get to a map
2. from the toolbar on the right, click the Text tool
3. Left-click somewhere on the map
4. Enter the text and set colour and stuff. I left it all at default and it seemed to work, but a few options worked too.
5. Press OK, text appears on map.
Adding text automatically shows all text, but you -can- hide it with ctrl-T in the text tool so check it hasn't been hidden maybe?
If you're doing something similar to this and it's not working, then you probably need to raise a bug report.
