It`s more Ghosts ’n Goblins/Metal Slug then actually Castlevania so the term Metroidvania doesn`t fit at all to the Game.
I assume that You have played the game long enough that You can confirm that it's not metroidvania?
It's not a definitive genre tag but more of a supplementary one to simply help you understand how the game's progression system works like. Whether it plays like Contra, Castlevania or Mickey Mouse and the Dong of Destiny is irrelevant.
Open world backtracking and weapons/powerups that usually help you progress weather it be more health damage or unlocking new areas, is usually what i consider metroidvania.
That word does imply more seriousness then which this game offers in terms of comparison.
Anyway, why do you seem so surprised about a Metroidvania game? There has been a hype of plenty of Metroidvania games in recent years, just type in the keyword and serach for em. My favourites Salt & Sanctuary and Hollow Knight. Less Castlevania and more pure Metroid with plenty of secrets as honorable mention would be Environmental Station Alpha.
I would ask you to either contribute to the discussion or just challenge any post here if you think someone's saying something wrong, but you're obviously not here for any of that but to rather just try to sound all smart, all while failing and instead coming off as pretentious if we have to
The funny part is, "metroidvania" as the genre's name (Or rather sub-genre really) just happens to be that one because both Metroid and Castlevania made that game design popular, but Castlevania actually didn't really add that much to it, to the point where the genre would exist even without SOTN.
Metroid is pretty much the original popular precursor and a few games followed a similar structure long before SOTN even existed, so it's quite weird to see this game being called a mix between both when Castlevania SOTN is pretty much Metroid but with some light RPG elements thrown in (Which aren't even used in most "metroidvanias").
To me, Metroidvania is a type of Castlevania game. Like, there is "Classicvania" (Rondo of Blood, Castlevania III) and "Metroidvania" which is a Castlevania with a Metroid level design.
Not that I have much issues with the term but feels kinda of wrong to not call "Metroid like"or something like that since Metroid was who created this kind of exploration. And I say this as a huge Castlevania fan, both classic and metroidvania.
