I'd ignore that guy and try it for yourself. It's entirely playable in singleplayer, and has an adjustable "Prestige" level that will go up and down to adjust the difficulty when you win or lose a round. The amount of enemies and difficulty scales based on the prestige level and number of players, so it's a manageable number when playing solo.
Ah well then it's a decent system I guess.
Based on the previous context provided by the original user, the question wasn't "can I play the game solo", it was "can I play the game solo and still have fun". The answer is a resounding, no, you probably won't. Obviously I don't speak for everyone, but it's essentially a worse version of the already neutered horde. The original horde game was much better but was ruined in later patches.
If you haven't bought the game, go ahead and buy it, install, try horde. You should understand what I'm talking about within the first hour, and thus under the refund limit of 2 hours.
You can see the overall impact that this mod made on the game in steam stats: https://steamcharts.com/app/629760 .
April 29th was when Horde was released. There was a 44% gain that month. We're now almost back to the original numbers from March, with a peak player count of 2062 in the last 30 days. March had 1774 as an example. A near 300 player gain for what is an equivalent of a mod is not a good sign and reflects the type of gameplay to expect. Most of the people I know are just waiting for the original horde to come back and this mod to go away, if that tells you anything.
