As for "meme", there's people going around memeing with the lute or playing fists only, or using the peasant perk. Mordhau has a good amount of meme loadout picks but it's not like the game is infested with it to the point of being it's only indentity.
You may encounter some toxicity but that's common in all online games. It's not allowed though. We punish any players that break the official server rules. You can report any offenders to us (the mods) if you want.
Now about the memes. There are some people that like to roleplay in game and do silly stuff and wear silly costumes. Bards playing the lute, shield-surfers, stuff like that. It's in the game's culture.
The meme's, yeah. it;s pretty memey. Shield surfing became a real thing, you can be a hobbit sized warrior, you can just get a hoe and till the land while the rest of your team plays Frontline and some deathmatch servers just give a handgun. It's not bad though, it rides the line of arcadey fun.
This is pretty much what you can expect from Mordhau veterans.
The question you should be asking is how do developers deal with toxic players e.g ignore/block list, vote kick etc.
but really, if you are such a snowflake that you get offended by a random stranger on the internet you may never see in real life and knows nothing about you, you should be more worried about your insecurity than the fool behind the keyboard.
For the toxic aspect well... The game is well-made enough to be fun, not well-made enough that you don't get mad at it. Game is inconsistent and betrays its own rules, has ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arbitrary details (spear has a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ reach, messer hitbox isn't where it looks like it is, chambers can trigger when they should not and won't trigger when they should) leaving the players EXTREMELY frustrated at each other, especially in "high-stakes" games. When it's FFA, nobody care that the game is wonky, but when it's ranked everyone gets mad really fast to die because somebody abused a stab glitch THAT STILL ISN'T FIXED IN 2021.
No we are all friendly in this game.. people always ask before duel, they teem work on public servers and nobody exploit mechanics or cheat.. It should be considered a saint of a game.

Some people get angry and call you a toxic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ when you write "lol" in chat after killing them.
So when reviewers say the game is toxic they could mean comments like that. But there is other kind of toxicity in this game too, like people being too sweaty. You had this in Chivalry too. Sometimes two enemies would meet up, have a 1vs1 duel or they just meme around. In Mordhau you got these salty tryhards that go out of their way to ruin their fun.
I disagree.
Even back in 2005 we had already seen the influx of avarage Joe/Judy. (from an Centreal/North European and North American perspective)
Games changed a lot during the that phase, it was not like 99´ ie.. Back then very few people actually played anything serious, unless they were abit "nerdy"
That being said, even in the 90´s you saw avarage joe/judy´s play games.. (more so on consoles ofc) One thing have changed however.
In 2000.. basically nobody in Russia (to make an example) had internet connection, it was like 4% of the population online.. contra my country with over 60% at the time. This changed rapidly in and after 2005, many of the regions/countries that had no access, suddenly all had access and coupled with the influx of gaming becoming mainstream, changed our world.
Mordhau is actually abit nerdy, but it also surges in the avarage Joe/Judy.
Nevertheless, only the "nerds" tend to stay... but not always in a good way.
While Mordhau is niche, I can find plenty of other genres and games, that are even more niche and does not have the issues mordhau does... so why?
Well.. Mordhau begs for mechanics abuse, griefing and its sometimes competitive focus also brings in cheatings.. it is not really that odd... The community does have friendly people, but even I sometimes use this game to "cope" and stress off abit.. so depending on the situation, random maul ffa galore can be fun, sometimes duels are much more fun..
But... since duels servers are not public, but made by other players, the rules are either not enforced or often exploited and changed depending on whom you are.. in many cases (not just private, but also pub servers) being an arse, will nick you some fame and you will have fun seeing angry people and newcomers scream....
The games nature, helps further this... obviously.
Nice necro.
