what are some tips to land in hits?
I really want to get better at this game. I'm good at defending myself, but I can't land hits on people. is there a certain mindset I should have or way I should play?

Step 1: Take zwei

Step 2: Press WASD randomly

Step 3: Spam left click

Gratz, youre good now :)

Want an easier way? No problem!

Step 1: Take maul

Step 2: Sneak behind players and press left click = insta kill

Optional step 3: Just faint and drag, humans will always make a mistake = free hit on head = dead :)

If you are whiffing you might just need some more practice with range. Pick a couple weapons you enjoy a lot and play play play, get used to how long/short your weapon is in comparison to your enemy.

You can faint during the weapon windup (before your character is fully commited to the stab/swing) which you can use to try and force a parry from your opponent. You can drag (where you pull away from the direction of your swing to delay the strike connecting) and accel (the opposite, pull into the strike). You can use morphs to change from a stab to a strike and likewise the other way round.

That's pretty much the basics.

Practise feints, drags and morphs. Simple stab to strike morph can get you a nice hit. Try to bind some attacks, for example:

Middle mouse button - right understrike
Scroll down - right upperstrike
Scroll up - right strike (remember to disable "Mouse X-axis flips attack side" in controls, otherwise it won't work right)
Side button (for me it's a small button next to scroll) - stab

It will feel weird at first but I guarentee you it will feel more natural later on. It's much easier to simply click one button and look down to make a fast surprise upperstrike rather then look up, strike and quickly look down. Go into training and practice those keybindings against a bot. You should focus on attacking, not matching up an angle to make a certain attack. Of course many pros prefer using mouse to get a certain attack... But it's just much easier to make drags using binds. Watch/read some tutorial about fight mechanics to understand the importance of camera and leg movement.

You could also try to come up with silly moves to surprise your enemy, such as coming backwards at the opponent just to land a surprise strike when he tries to get closer, or maybe spam R with longsword while spinning your camera around to make it harder for your enemy to read your strike. The key to victory is surprising your enemy, so try not to repeat the same moves over and over again, unless it's your strategy to land a different attack on an unsuspected enemy. You need to get to know your opponent, remember what attacks he makes, for example if he is a feint-spammer or maybe a drag-master...(theoretically) everything is counterable, you just have to come up with an idea to use it against your enemy.

Of course it applies only in a duel situation, because frontline is too chaotic to have a time for getting to know your enemy. Most duels there are either broken by other people or end up pretty quick. In 1vX situations try to not get cornered and surrounded, because it almost always ends up in you becoming a sword hegdehog. You should try to focus on parrying attacks and attacking the most unsuspected enemy, for example try to start a strike on the first guy but then quickly morph it into a stab and attack the second one. The main advantage that you have is you don't have to pay any attention to your teammates, where your enemies tend to slap each other's asses trying to hit you. You will be surprised how many 1v2 fights end up in your enemies killing each other in the process of trying to hit you :p

But most importantly, try to take a break for something that makes you happy when you are getting salty, or else you will make a lot of mistakes. Also spend some time on duel servers - sure, you will get your ass kicked, but it's the fastest way to improve - you won't get randomly killed from the back and you don't have to wait for the ranked game to start.

Well it became bigger than I expected it to be, hope it helps! I'm nowhere near being good, I'm getting ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up pretty frequently, I still suck at most 1vsX situations... but I definitely see improvements over the time. Good luck!

In a 1v1, practice Morphing from a stab to a swing by starting a stab then trying to start a swing.

My 'basic mixup' is messing with the timing of my attacks by waiting small amounts of time, and switching between doing 'normal' riposte swings or stabs and waiting a very small amount of time longer and doing morphs/feints. I generally use the Falchion or the Poleaxe, this stuff doesn't really apply with bigger weapons which can do drags more effectively.

In 1vX, I just try and get ripostes and switch targets.

For newer players I recommend for them to practice patience, most enemies will eventually mess up and miss you, that's your window of opportunity to land a hit.

To further increase your survivability, maintain distance; stay outside the weapon's damage window and know how close you can get to land damage and retreat safely.

Most importantly, keep your cool, anger will make perform irrational choices which will get you killed.

Something not mentioned here, but foundational in all sword fighting is footwork.
Always identify the deadliest range for the weapon you are using, as well as the one you are fighting against. A true master can dip into his own weapons range during an attack, and out of an enemies during a defense. Stabs are faster, but must be well aimed and can be easily side-stepped, while horizontal slashes are slower and cover more ground, but can be ducked. More vertical or diagonal slashes require tighter aim, but are much harder to dodge. Since they don't thrust out away from you, you generally need to be in close for these to land.
So practice your footwork, stepping into an enemy to attack, backing away to defend. Practice kicking when someone is trying to rush you down, and practice making your feints look just as real as your true strikes. Accels and drags and morphs and chambers are secondary to the development of solid, intuitive footwork.

Know your range, and your opponent(s) range. Keep in mind the angle of your attack.
cbdeakin Dec 28, 2019 @ 11:55am
1. Equip rapier
2. stand at distance to enemy
3. Stab at the moment the enemy begins their attack
4. Maintain distance and keep your movements unpredictable

Or
1. Parry then immediately stab (repost). You need to predict when the opponent will attack for this to be effective.

Or
1. Stab at long range, some players will run into your attacks without parrying :P

Ofc, doesn't work so well against other rapier players.
