The best maul setup is bringing a 1 point short sword or 2 point arming sword as a backup weapon.

From there? Follow your dreams.

To elaborate for just one reason to do this. Even speedy 1/1/1 armor won't let you 'chase' full plate people to death unless you wait until the absolute last second when you are rubbing up against them. And even then it might not work. So you just stab them in the back of the brainstem with a sword. Shortsword is same "Length" as the maul, but it's speed means it won't wiff like the maul in a chase.

Or you come up against an enemy maul user. If you are not confident in a big hammer duel, a little baby 1 point sword can parry the maul all day long while being much faster on the draw.

Definitely agree with a sidearm. Maul is good, but it lacks speed AND range, so you need to atleast be able to cover one of those in a clutch.

Arming sword is also just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ridiculous in general. I love it, I joke about it's OP nature constantly, but it's proooobably safe from nerfs because it's a primarily chopping weapon. (Axe meanwhile, deals more damage to flesh AND armor than the WARHAMMER. That's how deep the chop bias goes. Oh, and the warhamme'rs pointy side deals more damage to helmets than it's blunt side. That's how deep the choppy bias goes).

Don't underestimate 1-2 point weapons. It's probably why my toolbox and crossbow builds end up racking up so many baby sword decapitations. People just don't respect the low cost weapons.

RUSH MAUL BUILD
Maul (7 Points) / Dagger (1 Point)
Rush Perk (3 Points)
2/2/1 or 1/3/1 armor or 2/3/0 really your preference
Rush allows you to reposition quickly if you just nabbed a kill in the middle of a fight. If you don't feel this one, switch it out for more armor
--------------------------
BLOODLUST MAUL BUILD
because who needs armor
Maul (7)
Bloodrush(5)
2/2/0 or 1/3/0
Try to kill people before they kill you
Feel free to fit in a dagger somehow

Dagger in general is a great sidearm. Quickest pullout game you can have, so fast in fact it often gets mistaken for an attack and they parry - setting up a finishing stab.

Lederhosen man.

1/1/1
Maul/arming sword/fire pot.
Tenacious. Fireproof.

You throw the fire pots BEHIND people if they are trying to backpedal to safety, or between you and then sprint through the fire, etc. Basically you use it for zoning rather than a direct attack (And it also lets you rush people who try to buy time with their own firebombs).

(or, you bring bandages / other throwing weapon, but keep the fireproof).

"I can one shot you, you can't one shot me"
2/2/2
Maul/arming sword.
Tenacious.

(Gain a spare point with either of those builds by trading down to a shortsword).

Tenacious is only 1 point and gets you more overall mileage than bloodlust. It's a team game, and being able to back off then re-enter a fight faster through natural healing will go a long, long way.

It also adds up in long drawn out 1 vs 1 clashes where neither of you can quite kill eachother. I've lost track of how many times I've survived with 1 to 3 health thanks to tenacious kicking in.

Bloodlust is VERY strong. But the maul is so slow as it is that you won't be chaining kills unless the enemy ****s up badly, or you catch them off guard like a ninja. Bloodlust favors weapons that can helicopter around or otherwise pressure people to death in quick succession.

At the end of the day, bloodlust only works if you win. Tenacious is for trying to keep alive in a team game longer so you can get a win.

Regardless. My main claim is "Maul+ 1 or 2 point backup weapon." And then from there, whatever you are most comfortable with. Going fast with 1/1/1 is no good if you keep getting your head one shot by a halberd or zweihander.

Unrelated. If you want healing items, seriously, use bandages instead of medkits unless you want to heal teammates.

One bandage is 50 health, you get two bandages, AND it costs 1 point instead of 2

But more importantly you do not stop to stare at the ground and let me walk up and chop your head off because 3rd person camera won't save you when you are trying to use a medkit bag.

I thank god for enemies that bring medkits. Because it's usually free kills from people who would have regenned their health safely otherwise. "Oh you dropped a medkit right in the middle of the capture point huh? good job." *Literally throws arming sword for the kill*
