Longsword.

It's the jack of all trades weapon in that it's not the best at anything, but doesn't suck at anything either.

It really does depend.

The longsword is a decent and relatively inexpensive weapon that gets the job done. It's got a pointy end for sticking people, a slicing end for slashing the light armored folk, a thwacky mode for cracking tough nuts, and a special emote to shame people with. (Pommel throw)

Now if you want a very strong team fighting weapon, I'd recommend the halberd. It 2-shots just about everything, provided you learn to get good with morphs and dragging.

Ranged wise, try the crossbow. As a dueling weapon, just don't. As a team-fighting weapon, it makes counter-sniping a breeze and can fire instantly, rather than having to nock and arrow and draw. The reload might get you, but in a team fight, you should be far enough away and behind teammates where it isn't an issue. - Furthermore, it's cheaper than the other bows, meaning you have more points for armor, perks, and a backup weapon.

Axes are a very purpose-driven weapon: If you take an axe (Axe, Battleaxe, War axe), then take the "Wrecker" perk, and you will completely demolish enemy fortifications, and do bonus damage against destruction objectives.

If you're having trouble reading good players that like to feint and morph a lot, take a kite or heater shield, and a one-handed weapon. Some people like the bastard sword and messer for switching between 1 and 2 handed. Personally if I feel like a sweaty tryhard, I'll take the short spear. It has a VERY powerful throw attack that can 1-shot light armor to the chest.

Thanks for the very detailed post, i'll definitely use your tips. probably going to make a messer and kite shield build

Since you appretiate the surprising power of the Shortsword, The Arming Sword is basically "Shortsword +1"

I bring it with me alongside a Maul and then pull it out and find I've suddenly got 4 more kills with the little baby sword before I go down.

Decide to try out the Crossbow finally. Get 1 crossbow kill against an archer, because I'm too busy murdering people with the Arming Sword.

etc.

While it's a rougher lot trying to use it as a "Main" lacking BIG DAMAGE or the length+speed to spam like a rapier, it's a rock solid backup well worth bringing it (or the shortsword) along unless you are starved for points.

As for other "Beginner gear", don't underestimate simply having rank 1 armor (hats count as rank 1 helmets).

While it will not protect you from a headshot for most things that could have chopped your head off in one swing anyways, it IS a buffer against far more instant kills vs your torso, and some edge cases with legs.

For example, the peasant scythe gets 90 vs naked legs, and the executioner's sword lists 100 damage vs naked legs. That's why you see people used to fighting zweihanders in their pajamas caught off guard. Cause the Zwei gets like, 70 vs naked legs. and they think "If MY weapon can't kill with a legshot right now, clearly no other weapon in the game could!"

So go with 1/1/1 armor minimum to start with, rather than bare chested with jorts to shoehorn in some perks on top of big weapons (Well, unless you are using peasant perk). It won't save you from everything, but it will save you from just ENOUGH things to make an impact.

My trusty lederhosen has saved me just long enough from executioner swords to splatter their head like a watermellon with my Maul (Maul is the slowest weapon in the game and only as long as the shortsword. but oh so hilarious when it works)

I consider short spear and kite shield the ultimate beginner setup.

You can be useful without too many issues you would otherwise face, such as weapon getting stuck on terrain or hitting team mates. That's because you thrust 99% of the time and don't have to know the timing of parries or how to counter feints.

You will hit a lot, because the newer players on the enemy team will struggle to defend against it, because their reaction times and move-reading hasn't developed yet and they lack the techniques to counter thrusting weapons. On top of that you have good reach and don't have to bother with directional input.

You will be useful because with a kite shield you will last longer against archers.
Staying with your team, which is what you want to do as a beginner, your kit will prove very viable.
There is a reason the Greek Phalanx was so strong under optimal conditions, until equipment and battle tactics advanced

I can vouch for the Arming Sword too. An amazing tool for only 2 weight in your build. Coupled with a shield, it's a nasty thing indeed, like a small rapier but with swings that actually hurt too.

I still really love the bastard sword though with a shield. Even if you somehow lost your shield in the heat of battle and can't recover it, you can two-hand the sword and use it like a slightly smaller Longsword.

A Messer is also a great weapon, but weaker on the thrusts as you'd imagine and it's costly (heavy) if you want to one-hand it. Absolutely decimates light armour though and probably the most brutal weapon I've wielded so far. Limb severing and decapitations everywhere. :P

+1 to the short-spear/shield recommendations. It's an excellent loadout for newbies precisely because it's easy to be effective with and gives you the tools to be a functional member of your team in most circumstances.

Eventually, you'll find that it's weak against more experienced and skilled players and it will start to get hard to improve your performance much. At this point, consider learning 2-handed weapons like the longsword or a polearm of your choice (halberd, spear, poleaxe, and I'm a particular fan of the bill for its unique utility). They're harder to handle initially, but by this point you should have learned a lot from short-spear/shield and can improve from there.

It was more or less how i started. Bastard sword then after a while Messer (+shield in both cases)

Longsword with heavy armour is really good for beginner players. The sword is versatile and does decent damage. It's also cheap enough that you can use good armour.
Billhook is very juicy too, but it's a bit more complicated due to the length and lower speed.
Otherwise the Arming sword plus shield is pretty good for noobs. Or just shields in general
