Implying I don't exist.
I'm not looking for sympathy. Tips is what I'm looking for. Go crawl back under the rock you came from.
However, I do suggest learning the training sword. The fact that you're immune to stamina drain, if you chamber with it makes it an extremely powerful weapon if you carry a backup.
You could probably go into just about any duel server as a new player and say, "I'm new and want to get better does anyone want to duel." and people will duel you and they'll likely give you tips/pointers.
Another good thing to do in duel servers is spectate people that are doing very well and watch how they play and find what makes them successful.
This was mentioned, but just grabbing 2 training swords and dropping them in front of someone is good. Most people will pick it up and practice with you.
As far as whether you want to duel or frontline more,
I play 90% of the time on duel servers even though I'm more interested in 1vX or XvX, and it has translated well to frontline for me. It feels like it trivializes most combat in frontline unless you're very outnumbered.
Also, Etucc nailed this:
But at least this game allows ranged weapons and engineers, so i stick to that.
That said i probably had my best 1 vs 3 training dealing with some trolls that decided to gang up on me dressed as the mario brothers (complete with maul- eveningstar) and their buddy that looked like the brothel owner from GOT with a rapier.
I decided it was Roman centurion time with shield and messer and i knocked those mario brothers like a bows(er) for the remainder of the match, the GOT pimp was harder to deal with but he too got his moustache and the rest of the head shaven off plenty.
in the end i remarked "I should be mad that the 3 of you decided to pick on me, but the truth is it was the best 1 vs x training i've had i a while. So thanks for that, would have loved to hear you guys on your comms."
That's why I call myself a casual gamer. I don't have time to train up on games. I liturally get an average of a few hours a week in online gaming being busy with work.
I appreciate there is a skill aspect exciting for some people, but I will clock up happily 150 hours on this game over a few years too. But the other classes allow more thought out gameplay for those of us who don't have time to train up. Also as you get older your reactions get slower!
This is another reason I love team based, objective based gaming. And hope the scoreboard can reflect this more in the future.
Frontline is so much better imo, because you learn footwork and positioning, which is way more importantly than people think. And you can fight 1vX (you versus 2 or more people)
I like 1/1/1 bastard sword, and im not ashamed to say i get plenty of kills with backstabs. I like to play off of tanky teammates moving in and out of range quickly and making a nuisance out of myself. 1 v 1 , i use my speed to manage the distance and 1 v 2 i use my speed and footwork to try and keep 1 of them in front of the other. My kryptonite? 2 decent shield players, or 2 decent spear guys. I cant cause the sheild guys to panic parry - and i cant kick because whilst im kicking Shield A, Shield B is turning my head into mincemeat. Spears is a distance thing - with 1 i can get the upper hand on him, but 2 i can never seem to isolate 1 long enough to get a hit in.
Ive seen other good players usually with something like 3/3/1 and a greatsword. These guys will be matching me scorewise, however, they are usually in the thick of the action and their focus is all around blocks, ripostes and swing manipulation. 1 v 1 they are extremely hard to hit as their blocking game is so good and 1 v 2 they do lots of target switching.
These are 2 specific examples but honestly there are so many different playstyles you can use. There are some fantastic players who use long weapon, no armour and dodge. Some monsters with shields, some ridiculously good players with war axe and battle axe. Those axe guys im noticing get alot of accel ripostes in.
As far as finding your own technique, decide if you want to be fast or slow, decide if you prefer space to fight - longer weapon, or a more initimate face huggy style - shorter weapon. Build a few classes and hit frontlines. Once you have found something you are enjoying, take that to a duel server and see how you get on 1 v 1. Try and find varying opponents, landing a hit on the top guys is an achievement so dont be disheartened. If you do OK in duel mode as well, its time to start using that class everywhere. Getting to know your weapon is probably the most under valued part of improving in skill. If you can get to know your range, timing can beat speed. To explain, watch a maul user, slowest weapon but if he starts his swing at the perfect time as he moves into range, he can land his hit before somebody can hit him with the fastest of weapons, like a dagger!
Finally stick at it - some people how 1000s of hours of chivalry, and people are hurtling on towards a similar in mordhau as well! But its very rewarding when you start to pull of some great kills, and when you start killing those invincible level 60+ guys who you couldnt land a hit on at the start you'll know youve made it
