Hi The Baron, first off, I just got to say I love the game you have created. It's amazing fun and the reason I decided to get into VR after trying this adrenaline rush. Now with that out of the way, yes I saw that the game had updated to 8.3 and tried it with the same crash result. Thus I first tried to do the whole "safe modding"- bit that I'v done a few times before. Still crashed. So I thought that I would try the 8.4 beta instead - since that might have been the obvious problem. But to my great dismay the problem persisted. Im going to try a clean v.7 reinstallation and see if the problem persists (as I didn't have any trouble with versions prior to 8.3 earlier) then I intend to do a clean reinstallation of the 8.4 without mods and cleared save files etc. I'll see what error-messages I get in more detail from this so that a solution can be found.
This game is a must have for me, so I must get it working again.
1: Seems that a rollback to 7 works just fine. (no mods, clean installation) Could play for 20 minutes - no problem. (I used to play v7 all the time. But I got to say that 8.4 feels alot more polished)
2: Ran 8.4 Beta with clean installation (no mods, removed save files, etc) and it actually worked a bit longer than usual, for maybe 8 - 10 minutes, enough for me to get through 10 enemies and throw some delectable fireballs. Then the same error occured. (Side bug: my shadow would not render a head for my body.)
3: Ran 8.4 Beta with mods - game crashed after 5 minutes. As usual. Managed to kill 4 enemies to my delight atleast.
Ran AMD's bug reporting tool and saved the report if thats something you are interested in. From what I can tell it seems to be some kind of incompability between the 8.3/8.4 and AMD's latest drivers (Adrenalin-2020-20.11.2-Win10-64Bit-Nov18).
So I'm guessing the crashes are happening as a result of system strain (which explains why 8.3 was mega-crashing. Depending on what mods you are using, that could also explain why it causes more frequent crashes. For example, Outer Rim or big particle spell effects are gonna tax your system like crazy.
Simple solution - have you tried lower the graphics settings? The bests would be lower physics quality (this will greatly help your cpu), disable shadows (the no head is a logged bug btw - will be fixed!), lower persistent bodies/items and worst case also lower render scale to 0.75 if you are still having issues. Can you give this a try and see if it lasts longer?
Oh and before you test again - delete the folder located at Documents/mygames/BladeAndSorcery to flush out your save and config files of any modded data so you have a fresh start. This is a good practice when moving between game versions.
By the way, I am actually not the dev, I am community manager. Kospy is the lead dev.
While system strain could be the villain in this case, I find it a bit unlikely, unless the 8.3/8.4 has markedly worse preformance than the U7 version.
As a reference Im getting a stable 60-75 fps on Alyx. Don't know why, but my AMD Radeon software doesn't detect fps and other relevant data for Blade and Sorcery. But again, its always been fluid with high fps and problem free until the 8+ versions.
Will try lowered graphics settings, altough it does pain me a bit.
For each of my tests I have deleted ALL save files, in both Documents/mygames/BladeAndSorcery AND the warpfrog one. Going nuclear is always a good thing when problem solving haha. I'v also followed the FAQ about problem solving before I started bugging you here.
No matter if you are "only" the community manager, thanks should always be given to helpful devs/team members for games. So thank you for you time and help. ( But do send Kospy my thanks for this great game if you speak with him. )
Yes it literally did, lol! U8 had some major performance issues on launch due to issues with the character system being capped out on optimization. It led to major lag spikes on character spawns and many crashes. 8.4 beta was the solution to this and took almost 6 months to do as the tam rebuilt the entire character system. So in fact 8.4 was the direct solution to issues present from 8.0-8.3. 8.4 should be better, or at the very least on par with U7 performance, though you should find that in 8.4 you can run multiple enemy much better.
Its also not really possible to get a great benchmark of B&S against other VR games because B&S is mostly CPU hungry, rather than GPU. It's due to all the physics, which most games don't have.
In lowering your settings, I feel you, though it honestly shouldn't be too bad. Def lower physics quality and I bet you that you wont even notice the difference in gameplay. Shadows is not too bad a loss, and the only one that sucks is render scale, though at 0.75 the visual loss should be fairly minor and only really noticeable when you look at text. It gets much more noticeable when you drop to 0.5 however, and text at that point is significantly noticeable.
And no problem, man; glad to help if I can!
