Not only, would multiplayer be very hard, it'd be very expensive.
Whether coop, or PVP Multiplayer, we're gonna need servers, now we could use steam servers, but I'm sure the more you need them, the more they charge(if they charge at all im not sure). Now if we couldn't use Steams servers, we'd need someone to host them which is gonna have to be expensive for how many people we'd have buying the game, we can't do P2P because that runs massive security risks.
We'd need to figure out a solution to the physics being synced between machines, which could be done through the host, or the server, both of which are gonna be expensive. Most PCs struggle to run the game as it is, now introducing 2x the amount of physics to a single machine is bound to make the experience very disappointing.
Please note, I am in NO WAY a developer for the game i'm, just the Community Manager , so please take all of what i say, with a grain of salt.
I mean, if it's a local co-op, which is most likely what the people here want, you don't need to pay for servers, since it's up to the users to locally run the server.
Terraria for instance has the option to join other players, which creates a local server on the host's computer automatically, and makes their friends be able to join without the need to pay for expensive servers.
You're right about it being "very hard" to implement. Ignoring the difficulties of networking, the hardest part is that the game as it is now probably wasn't built to allow for multiplayer, so if it is to be implemented anytime soon, it would probably be after the ThunderRoad 2 framework move, since they basically need to rewrite everything to fit the new framework. Personally I doubt they will work on multiplayer soon if even at all, since, again, they would basically have to remake the game's whole code to work with server-sided things.
