How to use Skill gem

There is no tutorial so I could use some help understanding how to use the gems. I started with the body gem and can't figure out how to do the Jump stab attack.
Do you need to have the gem in your hand, inventory? Or leave it on the at the pedestal?

Cores are used at the spinny bit, and skills have a guide when you grip them, make sure you.. buy them

place the brightly coloured gem in one the slots on the monolith, grab the floating orb and read the description. If you want the skill, hold trigger to 'buy' it. Now, you have that skill and the skill says how it is activated.
Buying skills costs the 'gray' shards.

Alright, so the gem you found can be placed in the "spinny thing" as Kittin said.

Once you do that, it'll let you buy the "base" skill, for 0 crystals. Once you've bought that, you have that skill. After this, it'll show up 3 more little balls gravitating, that's 3 new skills you can buy on that core. These cost crystals you can find as loot.

So I did all this already but can't get the skill to work. Says to jump and punch but maybe I'm doing the motion wrong.

It's possible the motiion is jsut *wrong* try exerting a lot of force in your punch, and try and make it totally level, if that doesnt work, try with a dagger and stabbing toward sthe ground

After some trial and error I figured it out. You have to hold the gem in one hand and charge it up to do the attack.
