Difference between blackened spaulders and pauldron

Why are there both blackened spaulders and blackened pauldrons?
And what area do shoulder armors add defense to?

basically they both cover the same area, however spaulders dont cover your armpit region, pauldrons are larger and defend more regions.

Neither seemed to affect any of the defense stats in my inventory when I checked
