No really, if you are a VERY experienced and capable MMA-fighter up against the last incapable idiot in the world that has a spear in his hands for the very first time in his life, you MIGHT be able to pull this off - if you're lucky.
First thing you learn in self defence: if you're unarmed and the other guy has a knife - well, give him your bloody wallet! Or run, if possible. Weapons actually make sense!
I've practiced older (four guards) historical techniques of fencing and I've drilled for accuracy for a good chunk of time, so I find thrusting swords paired with a dagger to be very handy.
Axe. Even if it can't cut or cleave its victim, it can still do damage like a hammer and it's much easier to repair/replace. By virtue of being a polearm, it can be fit to deal with any situation (as seen with poleaxes).
