I don't know where Ishi came from, but Deekin was a character that you could meet in NWN, people loved him and his quotes so he became a sorta canon Forgotten Realms hero. Making a gnoll hero would (maybe?) require the approval of Wizard of the Coast? CNE often said that Wizard of the Coast is a bit picky, even on the soundtrack. Plus I can't remember (or find on the web) any info about meaningful gnolls that became something more than just a villain and that doesn't help.
It's like some races were always treated as villain material, I know that some years ago you couldn't even play drows but at least Drizzt & Co. came out... so who knows. I'd love to have illithids, hobgoblins or gnolls as playable heroes...
My knowledge on d&d stuff is rather slim, but I recall there being some type of gnolls that aren't under the control of the yeenghubalbablgobl guy. Sadly I can't recall what sort of name they had, supposedly was in some other dimension or somethin.
