If you're in a hurry, you can actually buy champions. Otherwise, in one month or less you'll find yourself with a dozen extra champions, or more.
I've been playing for... Well, around half a year now, and have over seventy champions, never spent a single coin in this game (or any other "Free to Play" game ever created, actually.)
EDIT: As for "starting from a higher level" the champions' levels reset when you end of an adventure (but not the gear or items you obtain through chests,) and except from some specific (event/time gate) adventures, you'll always start with the last "slot 1" champion you had selected, which for a new player will always be Bruenor.
Also I read that one should buy "auto-clickers" - otherwise the game can't be played effectively. Having taken a look at the shop, I don't get what the auto-clickers should be...
Check the guides section, there should be at least one guide (or ten) with codes that are up-to-date, look them up and you'll find several codes to unlock champions that are still active (mostly the current season ones.)
EDIT: The season pass, like in every other game I've seen that has them, is just a way for the developers to try to entice people into wasting real money in virtual trinkets. You can get a lot of advantages and rewards without buying the Season Pass, and while the rewards are purposefully better, I've not been affected much by not having them.
For example, last season I got to level 128 before it ended, twice as many levels as the season pass has, and got the "Acquisitions Inc" champions up to a point where a couple of them are still my best DPS champions. In the current season I'm level 70 right now, and the five seasonal champions are getting pretty impressive numbers now.
So yeah, despite all the whining from the whales (as in every F2P game ever,) this game can be played for free, and you can unlock all champions for free. But being an idle game, it will take you a while.
Auto-clickers = familiars. There are quite a lot of them in the shop. Apart from a couple of very minor gimmicks, all familiars are equal and fully interchangeable. Familiars are actually one of the best long-term investments in the game until you get 20-25 of them. As a rule, it is possible to buy about 15 cheap discounted familiars in a year, and get 3-4 of them for free as gifts in various events. Some familiars can also be purchased in the gem shop.
Also, I got 108 chests now in total. Any reason to keep them? Or should I just go ahead and open everything? Some seem to be for specific chars.
One minor recommendation: don't open electrum chests until you have at least about 10 non-starting champions because it's much easier to get gear for default champions than for event champions.

Default champions are in the top row.
Gold chests can be opened at any time, but there are seasonal quests for opening champion-specific chests, so if you don't have a champion, or any of your non-basic champions have all their gear, saving them up can be wise. Those gold chests also have a chance to have some of the larger potions, which can be useful, but there's no part of the game that requires using potions.
Electrum chests give gear for any champion you already have. Some people say you should keep them for when you unlock a new champion. Me, I just open them because I am not going "munchkin" on this game, I'm raising almost all champions equally (except Valentine, Omin, Jim, Zorbu and Jarlaxle, who I consider very useful for varying reasons.) Besides, "new champion" doesn't mean "good champion," there's been plenty of events with mediocre-to-useless bench-fillers and gear can't make up for their pathetic, gimmicky mechanics.
Edit: One potentially mediocre champion is going to show up tomorrow in a new event, so you can get a champion (or probably up to three if the event has all three slots full.) Whether any of them will be better than the starters is always a matter of what you want to do - Jarlaxle is quite an average DPS but I geared him up because I saw the potential use he had in the Trials of Mount Tiamat ("End game" content which is actually not as challenging as "end game" makes it sound, you can solo it with enough preparation.)
But yeah, potions are very optional in early game. Speed potions can save you time, but there's champions that will speed things up in other ways, like lowering area requirements, or debuffing enemies, or making more enemies appear (letting you get area requirements or quest requirements quicker,) there's even some champions that can skip areas (bosses and all,) but my one champion that does that is... Underwhelming at that, and not that good at buffing or tanking, either, so I have her sitting in a bench.
For starters you should try doing missions to unlock Dritz. Basically, keep going on missions, skip the variants for the time being and just keep unlocking the main story line missions. You can always go back and do variants when ever, and many you need to wait because you won't have enough heroes to run because of restrictions.
Btw season passes are pretty nice if you like the heroes in the season. They also come with a familar which typically sells for 2.50-5 dollars, and they come with modron Chests which is helpful later. But the season passes really help you lvl up the season heroes, giving them a really nice boost. You also need to unlock the stuff so for a new player at this point with a month left i'm not sure it would be worth getting, But if you make it a good way into the season you could always pick it up later. Only you will know if it's worth it.
the other nice thing about a season, though you don't need the pass is the time gates for them are only 3 pieces vrs 6, so half the cost. Unlock them all. also this season has a modron core around lvl 20 something. So try to unlock that at least. If you have questions about the season unlocks just ask, but basically you need to unlock the characters then use them in a group. The nice thing about them is you could use them to really help you move along with getting new characters to use. So between the season and the event, you should have 8 heroes added to your roaster.
