how are you supposed to do these challenges with lucius

I haven't taken a very close look at the challenges, but leveling up ONLY Lucius while leaving the other champions unlocked but at level 1 might work out for you. I do agree that Lucius is sub-par.

I'm doing a modified gem farm team for this BUD challenge. He's in the middle column and I've got Nova in the row in front of him. Since it's Widdle for the weekly buff, she in the middle. Hell, here's the formation:

The real challenge is Sentry's Echo... ugh, still only 6xx/5k THAT'S going to take a while.

My first suggestion would be to use Valentine and get as many formational buffs on both Valentine and Lucius as possible, while getting as few as possible on other DPS Champions. This should get them at 1.5 X on Lucius while only 1 X on the other DPS, thus giving Lucius the advantage on the D in DPS.

I would also suggest adding Desmond and taking his Embrace the Beast as well as adding both Widdle and Birdsong. You will want Desmond adjacent to both Valentine and Lucius, Widdle adjacent to Valentine (and Lucius for 1.5 x her formational damage buff if possible), and Birdsong within 2 slots of both Valentine and Lucius (for 1.5 x her formational damage buff), while also having her away from as many other DPS Champions and other formational buffs as possible. This will set all DPS champions' base attack speed to Birdsong's quick attack speed, and then shave between 0.5 to 1 second from the other DPS Champions' attacks, but 0.75 to 1.5 seconds from Lucius', thus giving Lucius the advantage on the S in DPS.

Also, because Lucius is attacking faster, he also gets more chances to get free extra attacks from Widdle.

This should help you put Lucius's DPS above all other DPS Champions' DPS in your formation, while still having a powerful formation.

Edit:

One final suggestion for if you're still having trouble getting Lucius to have the highest DPS, consider adding Asharra, having him away from as many formational buffs as possible, and have him bond with Dwarves and Elves while having no DPS Dwarves nor other DPS Elves in the formation. Preferably no Dwarves nor other Elves of any kind if possible in order to prevent Asharra from bonding with himself.

Do you not understand the game? That would do it.

AEROIS synergy is an old mechanic that nobody ever talked about. But I've used it before as it is powerful.
Lucius is the DPS output of this mechanic, so it is super easy to make him the top DPS. You just put him in. Done. What's the hard part?

Don't use Nova. Nova is insanely powerful and nobody ever talks about it.
Use sentry on front line, qilek behind that, lucius beside qilek.
Put a clicker to level lucious, don't level up anybody else beyond their speed skills.
Set clickers to use AEROIS champion ultimates.
Easy.
Reset at 250 when completiong time falls off, set up again and comlpete another 250 with Luc as top DPS.
It's not.. how is this difficult?
How is getting sentry to proc difficult? You put her in. She procs.

Alright, I've been distracted by the Trials of Tiamat stuff and I took a serious look at this. I'm currently at tier 6 of that milestone quest. As I mentioned in another thread, most of what I did was put Lucius in a formation with Sentry and Qillek, in a patron free play, and set the modron reset to 100.
