The only 2 things that are potentially worth buying in this game (depending on how you play) are Familiars (you can get a bunch of them for ingame currency as well) and then some specific Gold Epic items for great convenience.
In any case, this is not necessary and you have a lot of players playing for free. I think I spent my first money well into the second year of playing when I knew I want to stick with the game.
EDIT: oh and the familiars you do buy - always buy them on sale
Well it looks like it takes forever to unlock new heroes. I mean, you get the time pieces to unlock them. Other than that you need to wait for event, it just looks a very time demanding thing
Of course you may be less patient ... just don't expect them to do anything about pricing.
Once you get to patrons you will be able to increase that to 5.
It's just very slow at the beginning :)
With my patrons unlocked I get 4 time gate pieces a week. That's 16 pieces a month from that alone. In a 30d period you should pick up another 6 more pieces (1 every 5 days). This leaves 22 pieces, so I can open 3 time gates a month.
If you only want to unlock champions as fast a possible you can do one variant, and then close the time gate. This will reimburse you 2 time gate pieces, 1 for each gold chest you did not claim. This would give you another time gate to open.
Therefore you could unlock 4 champions a month. But wait, that last time gate could be closed early too, for a return of 2 time gate pieces.
22 pieces - 18 pieces = 4 pieces left over.
Using your reimbursed pieces you can open another time gate for a 5th champion.
Then you have your free time gates.
This is a 2d puzzle game with probably a staff of half a dozen people (probably).
I could place up to 27 familiars on the screen on one party and I have bought a couple of the cheapest familiars to help me along but I am far from fully automating everything.
From now on though the familiars available seem to be AUD$7.50 as a minimum per familiar. If they sold familiars at about AUD$2.50 with or without their packs of chests and potions, I might have had 27 by now..
Most packs and wild offers are not in the least tempting to me.
Don't just do one though, you need all the gear with new champs you can get. Especially timegate ones.
@skl - you get 3 from events typically (as a new player)
1 from the slow drop rate of pieces at the beginning
this can be increased as Naramrus has said as you eventually get 4 time pieces from the patrons shop, once they are unlocked and you have met the required influence.
There is no race to collect them all, they will eventually be unlocked in time. The best thing to do is try and unlock champions that will either make your game more speedy or your roster more powerful first then focusing on trying to get split the party 1 and the modron core. Then the same for split the party 2 and the core 2 (technically 3 but don't worry about the other one which is 500k gems).
Gearing your champs up to blue should be the goal at first and this is made easier by electrum chests (see my list here:Contents page for codes). Otherwise your gems can be spent on either familiars (which automate your gameplay) and gold chests (to gear your evergreen champs (core and evergreen are the ones you start with, have got through the campaigns or newsletter) to fully epic.
But this is getting into it a bit. I think I linked my guides before but just in case:

The Things YOU should NOT Worry About When Just Starting Out
They do have sales on in the steam store. But wild offers come in three tiers (and in their own currency). Tier 1 is 9.99 and below. Tier 2 is between 10 to 17.99 and Tier 3 is anything above (usually start at 19.99). These "tiers" is what you read when you buy them by the way and thus is my assumption of their tier base, so I may be off a few dollars or so.
They convert into your currency but i am not sure if that is regional pricing as pound sterling is better than every other currency it comes in lower than their prices. I am guessing it's Exchange rates etc. so typically for me a tier 1 is 7.99/can be as low as a fiver though, tier 2 is 9.99/or high 9s and tier 3 is 15.
Despite all of this, you don't have to buy these, and the steam store ones go on sale fairly regularly. (every quarter give or take) And they have a retirement sale every year (which just went for this year)
But yes, the wild offer system is totally RNG (until you buy some then it gets a bit like it knows what you are willing to buy) and it's just a waiting game really to get something good.
ps I agree on familars. I have been saying since I got here, just do 1 familiar on its own for 1.99 and do 3 or 4 familiars as a pack for 12. But I am not sure how they price things honestly. It seems to be tiered but as all fams do the same thing it seems they put a price on consumables which you can get easily in game. Except, there are always exceptions, for the founders pack which has a unique potion in usually it seems (a potion that makes your gems go up for 7 days) which in fairness did used to be an effect which was applied as soon as you bought the pack so now at least you can choose when to use it.
So let me elaborate. I can buy:
bundle with year 1 or year 2 heroes (with a bunch of chests) for 55 USD = direct conversion to my currency 289 BRL (THIS IS A LOT OF MONEY, I can pay 1/3 of a monthly house rent in an average house)
The regional price that this game has: 100 BRL. Stil expensive but, ok, it is doable if I really want to.
OR I can buy one hero, let say, Xander
Just the hero: 10 USD (53 BRL)
Hero + 7 chests + ring 20 USD (106 BRL)
How does it make any sense? The individual heroes have no regional prices, making them pretty much impossible to buy if I wish to. But if I want to get a bundle, I can get a bunch of heroes, + a bunch of chest for less than 1 hero + 7 chests + ring.
I mean, I don't know if I managed to explain myself. Just saying that the pricing on this game is wrong.
