Also the variants do shake up the "best" formation a bit (pity you can only do them once).
Check the "Basic Formation layout" towards the end; it's a good base to see how to make a formation.
This is for the "current meta"; there will be an update "soon" (within this year? Definitely on the official to-do-list) that should make tanking etc. more useful. Right now it's all about buffing 1 dps.
Tank is not important as long as he/she has high health compared to others.
Damager is the one you choose skills of others to have effects on.
Supporters are all the others to give damage bonus to Damager and/or heal Tank. Again, Celeste can do both if placed correctly, but looses healing speed after 200-210.
Some supporters need to be close to Tank and Damager. In front / Behind / Near / Not Near are most typical ones. When you understand this pattern, the rest will solve easily to a formation
