"Formation Strategy"
When I hear formation strategy I just sense that it is solvable (meaning you do the 1 right thing to play it)
So lets see, this doesn't take a genius to figure out,Tanky warriors in front, Wizards, and archers in the back? I just don't get what "Formation strategy" adds to the game besides making you do something that is predictable in nature, ie warriros to the front, casters to the back?

What does this add to the game? Was "formation strategy" supposed to make me go "Yeah, thats exactly what I was looking for in a game." ? Even though it looks like the same diamond formation?

You forget the characters buffs / debuffs, which is the most important part in the game, and the way it pulls (or not) some synergies.

Most buffs depends of the relative position of the buffed character compared to the buffing one, so maximizing the damage of your formation is quite like a puzzle...

On the information provided, you haven't solved it.

The fool opens his mouth and removes all doubt. How about you find out what strategies work before you jump in and declare you figured it out? You can't be this stupid.
I haven't even played the game yet ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this was just the impression I got.

That is the basic idea that will more or less hold up until you get to where you fill up the whole formation. But, that's when they start throwing curve balls at you, like removing certain slots or changing the shape of the formation or restricting what characters you can use, etc. So at its core it's the usual idle game grinding, but there's significantly more strategy involved on top of that if you want to maximize your effectiveness.

There's always going to be a best formation for each player, but it depends on the scenario, what champions you have unlocked, and what your gear level is on each of those champions. Top DPS champion is probably Strix... unless it's Birdsong or Jamilla, or even Hitch. Depends on gear, depends on the level.

There are many guides to getting the "best" formation, but they do largely depend on the amount of favour you have in a campaign, and the gear levels of various champions (especially event champions that can't be geared up after the event).

Also the variants do shake up the "best" formation a bit (pity you can only do them once).

Check the "Basic Formation layout" towards the end; it's a good base to see how to make a formation.
This is for the "current meta"; there will be an update "soon" (within this year? Definitely on the official to-do-list) that should make tanking etc. more useful. Right now it's all about buffing 1 dps.
most of the heroes are supporters either healing or increasing damage when it comes to choose a skill. celeste do both.

Tank is not important as long as he/she has high health compared to others.

Damager is the one you choose skills of others to have effects on.

Supporters are all the others to give damage bonus to Damager and/or heal Tank. Again, Celeste can do both if placed correctly, but looses healing speed after 200-210.

Some supporters need to be close to Tank and Damager. In front / Behind / Near / Not Near are most typical ones. When you understand this pattern, the rest will solve easily to a formation
