Midwinter Event Completion Challenge
I'll be starting a new account today with the goal of completing the Midwinter Event 100%. This is will be a ground-up fresh account with absolutely no gear or prior champion unlocks.

Should I use the free Celeste DLC pack in this challenge?

Poll is here (until 1/25):
http://www.strawpoll.me/14918789

Votes are counted and say yes.
To be fair, I'll do (attempt) a 175 run without Celeste as well.

I'll go by whatever the vote ends up being.

I'll be updating this thread and chronicalling my path, what choices I make, and explanations as to why. Hopefully, it will give some newer players some good tips, and maybe some older players too!

I'll be using an album format for the images, choices, and things like that to make it easier to read and follow (hopefully) rather than a long post on Steam.

For hours played, I'm not including idle time. This is just time spent in the game either doing gem runs (mostly time will be spent here) or checking to level heroes/restart adventures for favor. Checking heroes is a fairly quick action. I literally buy the hero upgrades, set it back to autoprogress, then walk away.

Results of the Day
-Current Wall: 95 (Torm)

-Current Favor: 1.13e5 Torm, 0 Kelv
-Current Playtime: ~4 hours (10 total)

Day 4, 1/20/18: https://imgur.com/a/MEKjY
Important Notes:
-Started Tomb
-Gem runs to stockpile
-Bought 2 Gold Chests, very sad[imgur.com]

Results of the Day
-Current Wall: 85 (Kelv)
-Current Gems: 2300
-Current Favor: 1.73e5 Torm, 1.10e4 Kelv
-Current Playtime: ~3 hours (13 total)

I spent way too much time idling today, and wanted to get in more runs. I managed to finish 3 good runs in Kelv, plus some gem runs. Managed to purchase 2 Gold Chests, and still have +100 gems over Day 3. Was shooting for 5 runs, but life happens.

Day 5, 1/21/18: https://imgur.com/a/cNTxu
Important Notes:
-More Gem Runs (LOTS of gem runs today)
-More Favor Runs

Results of the Day
-Current Wall: 100
-Current Gems: 3251
-Current Favor: 1.73e5 Torm, 6.19e4 (Kelv)
-Current Playtime: ~5 hours (18 total)

Day 6, 1/22/18: https://imgur.com/a/WrO2Y
Important Notes:
-Same as Day 5 - more favor runs, more gem runs (2 favor, tons of gem runs today)
-Need to build up as much as I can. 2 days before the event!
-Bought (gems) and opened 3 Gold Chests today
-Purchased some Kelv blessings[imgur.com]
-Game crashes when there are 40+ mobs on the screen. Screenshot[imgur.com] of it about to crash.

Results of the Day
-Current Wall: 105
-Current Gems: 2600
-Current Favor: 1.73e5 Torm, 3.65e5
-Current Playtime: ~3 hours (20 total)

I ran into a problem today. Any time there is 40+ mobs on screen, the game crashes (running on my secondary PC). This is very disappointing, and may ruin my bid to 175. It's happened several times, and certainly affects my ability to farm with Makos or idle at higher stages.

Day 7, 1/23/18: https://imgur.com/a/ePrfq
-Getting excited about event, it keeps getting teased!
-Same as before, more gem runs, more favor. I need to hit 2.5e6 Kelv favor today.
-Purchased a few more blessings to try and increase favor gain per run
-Purchased 3 Gold Chests[imgur.com]

Results of the Day
-Current Wall: 129
-Current Gems: 1800
-Current Favor: 1.73e5 Torm, 1.20e6
-Current Playtime: ~2 hours (22 total)

Today wasn't all that productive (had a bunch of real life obligations). I got in 2 good runs, and one overnight run at my wall should net me enough favor to obtain the T1 blessing tomorrow on 1/24. The crash with multiple mobs on screen certainly hampers my farming efforts with Makos, too. Such a shame.

Day 8, 1/24/18: https://imgur.com/a/8tcfw
Event should be here! (Hopefully)

Well today has started out terribly. I woke up, and the game had crashed. It crashed about 30 minutes after I left. I didn't get hardly any idle time, and thus no Kelv favor.

I still need about two runs to get the required favor for the T1 Blessing prior to the event.

Results of the Day
-Current Wall: 135
-Current Gems: 2300
-Current Favor: 1.73e5 Torm, 2e4
-Current Playtime: ~2 hours (24 total)

MIDWINTER IS HERE
Unfortunately, you don't start with 100 tokens. But I'll be doing the above strategy as soon as I get my 100.

Blank Formation[imgur.com]

Opening Event Strategy
For those following, I'll post my opening event strategy now so you can prepare.
-Start the 100 token adventure (it's the first/default one).
-Go to level 49, then open 10 Silver chests.
-DO NOT finish level 50. Reset your adventure instead.
-The next adventure will cost you 100 tokens.
-Utilize the favor you just gained to go back to 49. Open 10 more Silver chests.
-Repeat as necessary. Usually I repeat until I hit 5-10k favor. Takes 2-3 runs.
-Once you have initial favor, your first actual 100 token run should be at a very nice wall, and you'll be in a good position to earn even more favor.
-The reason you do this is because tokens are more limited than time during the event, and this maximizes favor early on.

Goals to prep for the event:
-DONE- 50% Global Damage Blessing - Torm[imgur.com] 1e5 Favor
-DONE- Complete 4 Variants to unlock Kelv
-DONE- Tutorial
-DONE- Cursed Farmer
-DONE- Mad Wizard
-DONE- Beast Intentions

-DONE- 50% Global Damage Blessing - Kelv
-DONE- Stockpile at least 50 Silver Chests (or the gems to purchase them)

Optional:
-FAILED- Temporary Worship Global Blessing - Kelv

Formations:
Starter Formation:
https://imgur.com/2Sz0hIs
This is a good starter formation for any campaign. You'll get heals, and Celeste + Bruenor do some decent damage early on.

Idle Formation:
https://imgur.com/ydbTggY
Prior to getting enough HP on Nay or enough Shields on Calliope, this formation is useful for idling overnight. You'll probably have to scale down some levels to keep up as it has lower DPS, but it ensures you stay on your current level (needed for gaining boss kill achievements).

Beginner Formation, Torm:
https://imgur.com/HrZtPom
Here, Hitch is primary DPS with Minsc in the picture

Advanced Formation, Torm:
https://imgur.com/E9ArjtH
Minsc is moved out in favor of Jamilah's DPS. Hitch rotates back to Support.

General Formation, Kelv:
https://imgur.com/toBqszp
Minsc comes in due to the extra spot, and LOTS of Undead abound.

General Formation, Midwinter Event:
TBD

The majority of my time will be spent in Kelv to try and acquire the T2 Global. I'm not sure when the event starts (1/18? 1/24?), so I'm not sure how much prep time I'll have. The Damage Global Blessings are a must, and will be had either way.

General Tips
Open Silver Chests at your wall if you aren't going to idle for long periods of time. Then restart your run. This will help maximize your favor gain per run and truly accelerate things. The general rule I've found is that 10 Silvers offer the greatest favor returns, but opening less when you have less is entirely acceptable. When you unlock Makos and his Ultimate, you won't need to do this as his Ultimate kills substitute for chest opens (and eclipse them when you gear him up).

Gold from Contracts, Silver Chests, Distractions, and Offline earnings is influenced by your Party DPS (the DPS in the upper left corner) and total favor for the campaign. Jarlaxle will also increase it, as will Nay's tanking buff. POTIONS WILL NOT INCREASE THE AMOUNT GAINED.

Open Gold Chests immediately. There's no reason to keep them, unless you're waiting for a champion unlock.

Ultimate Damage scales with Party DPS, not individual champion DPS. This means that heroes like Celeste still do some damage with their Ultimates. It also means that not every character has to be top-tier DPS. This especially affects Makos, because you can take advantage of his Luck ability to gain lots of gold/favor by using his Ultimate to kill.

The Variant No Time to Rest located in Sword Coast (Unearthed Evil) is the fastest way to make gems. Hands down, it is the best. Mobs spawn much quicker, but gold gained is set to 25%. For gem runs, however, we don't care about gold gained - only getting to the bosses as fast as possible. You will want to unlock this when you can, and DO NOT FINISH IT. The mission ends at level 150. Never reach level 150. Continually "fail" it so it's still available.

If you can help it, don't close out of the game. Offline Gold earned is about 10% of what you would acquire if the game is on and idling while your champions kill things. It's a massive disparity. Not everyone leaves their computer on, however.

When you do idle (offline or online), make sure to idle at your wall (highest completed stage). If you are Offline, make sure your formation is the highest DPS possible. Offline Gold gains are determined by your Party DPS.

Don't farm long at your wall. There's no real point to sitting there staring at the game. Your best use of time is using Silver chests to gain money (and thus favor), but barring Silvers, spend 15-30 minutes idling at your wall, then reset. Optimally, you'll use Makos (Luck path) to blast a few Ults with stacked mobs on Nayelli.

*Gem runs are runs where you purchase nothing but click damage and progress until you can no longer one-shot enemies. The point of doing this is to acquire gems quickly from bosses, reset, repeat.

General Build Guidline:
Unless otherwise specified, I'll be using the following tree selections on these heroes. In most cases, there's not really a true option of choice as one is usually vastly superior.

Bruenor - Battle Master
Celeste - War Domain
Nayelli - Vengeance
Jarlaxle - Socialite
Calliope - College of War
Asharra - Bond: Human
Minsc - Varies on Map
Hitch - Charismatic
Makos - Dark Luck
Tyril - Moonbeam
Jamilah - Brute Strength

Gaarawarr's Guide to Midwinter - Here's some info that I don't include that may assist with your event

Deadwinter Date (1000 token mission)
Deadwinter Date, Blank Formation[imgur.com]
Deadwinter Date, Optimal Formation[imgur.com]
-Strategy: You have 2 less slots, so you'll be dealing a bit less damage. There's still a solid 2 column DPS layout, so it's not really that bad. You only need to clear 75 to finish this one.

Deadwinter Fay (2500 token mission)
Basic Formation, no Regis[imgur.com]
Optimal Formation, No Regis + Event Champs[imgur.com]
-Strategy: This one is pretty straightforward, and the fairy dust shouldn't pose any issue unless you're idling on a stage for a long period of time. It takes a massive 10 stacks to see the debuff, so it really doesn't matter. If you wish to idle, I suggest doing so on a boss stage, as there is no fairy dust.

Deadwinter Pay-back (5000 token mission)
Formation w/Barrowin[imgur.com]
If you lack Barrowin, sub Ty in the same slot.
-Strategy: Use Calliope in the middle of the formation, and level her. You'll need her shielding capabilities.
Keep Nayelli as low level as you can. If you level her too much, she will die constantly. Calliope and other pepople have other priority for your gold. Depending on gear, you will need some babysitting. More gear = less babysitting because Call's shielding will be greater (she has two pieces of gear to boost shields).
If Call's shield > 10% champion life, you are good.

Day 1[imgur.com]
Day 1 Shiny[imgur.com]. On my secondary account... Sadface. :(
Current Wall: 49
Auril Favor: 2,054

Day2[imgur.com]
-Votes for Free Celeste Pack are Yes (19 yea to 14 nay)
-To be fair, I'll do (attempt) a 175 run without Celeste as well.
Current Wall: 120
Auril Favor: 3.75e4

Day 3[imgur.com]
-More free play and LOTS of idle time. Probably just 1 hour of play time today, if that. I've spent more time editing posts and uploading images than actually playing today. The majority of today (and probably the next few days) will be idling in the event to gain much needed favor.
-Opened 3 Gold Chests (gems)

Current Wall: 135
Auril Favor: 1.87e5

Day 4[imgur.com]
-Finished Deadwinter Fay
-More Free Play for favor build

Current Wall: 140
Auril Favor: 5.80e5

Day 5[imgur.com]
More favor grinding for the event.
Pretty boring day, lots of idle time.
I did nab a Gold chest for Regis.
I'll also be using some of my contracts to gather more tokens. At this point, that's my major roadblock. If I can clear 175+ in Free Play, I'll have this event down.

On my primary account, I was able to max all champions at a reasonable level with 1e8 favor. So that will be my goal here as well.

Current Wall: 150
Auril Favor: 5.80e5

Day 6[imgur.com]
More favor grinding (oh boy!)
Still lots of idle time, just grinding favor and collecting tokens for the next run.
I opened 2 gold chests today with the gems I've earned from runs. Nothing big in them.

I'm close to beating the 150 wall, just need a few DPS upgrades (ie, more favor). I might get him down tonight. If not, definitely tomorrow. From there, I think everything else is downhill.

LOOK WHO DIED! 150 Devourer is down!
https://imgur.com/G84WCQW

Current Wall: 160
Auril Favor: 2.31e6

Day 7[imgur.com]
Same stuff, different day.
Lots of idling to try and accumulate more favor.

Current Wall: 160
Auril Favor: 2.31e6

Day 8[imgur.com]
Almost there! Wall is at 170 now.
Still need a bit more favor to make it smoother, but it's getting much closer.

The run today will be using Makos in Dark Blessing form to eek out as much DPS as possible. Very close now!

Still walled at 170, and not even damaging the boss. Need lots more favor to buy the last few upgrades.

Current Wall: 170
Auril Favor: 6.27e6

Day 9[imgur.com]
More Free Play today to build favor. Need more champion upgrades to push past that 170 wall.
Proof that RNG is RNG https://imgur.com/9CBY3Wk

Current Wall: 170
Auril Favor: 9.41e6

Day 10[imgur.com]
Sigh... Day 10. This is starting to wear on me. Mainly because of the constant crashes and need for babysitting to reset the client if it's crashed. I'm still stuck on 170, but so close to getting that down. Unfortunately, I'll still have the 175 boss to contend with as well. Only a few more days left in the event! e8 favor is out of the question, at this point, as I won't have enough tokens to keep running Free Plays.

Current Wall: 170
Auril Favor: 1.36e7

Day 11[imgur.com]
Today is the day! I feel it! 175 is in my crosshairs!

I'll be using Makos in Blessing for a bit of an extra push, but I think the favor I earned on Day 10 will allow me to buy those critical last upgrades to push on through.

170 is down![imgur.com]
Favor, gear, and Party DPS are in the screenshot for reference!

Current Wall: 175
Auril Favor: 1.36e7

Day 12[imgur.com]
175 is DOWN!!! I woke up this morning after the idle from Day 10, spent some gold into Celeste for a DPS upgrade, and was able to kill the last boss.

For reference - you'll need to be doing ~7e45 Party DPS, and have earned about 1.5e26 gold on the run. I did this with 1.36e7 favor.

Deadwinter Fay is on my list of to-do things today.

Deadwinter Fay is DOWN! Going to idle on one of the boss levels to gain some additional favor. I have enough tokens for 2 more Free Plays as well as the variant for Deadwinter Payback.

Current Wall: 180
Auril Favor: 1.93e7

Achievements:
-DONE- Recruit Regis
-Finish the 100 token mission

-DONE- Deadwinter Done
-Finish all 3 variants

-DONE- Comfortable Attire
-Fully gear Regis (all 6 slots)

-DONE- The Long Patrol
-Finish level 175 in a Deadwinter Free Play

-DONE- Problem Solving Halfling
-Use all 6 of Regis' specializations
--Buff Behind: Melee/Ranged/Magic
--Buff Ahead: Melee/Ranged/Magic

TOTALS
Silver Chests used: 138 (both pre and during event)
Gold Chests used: 41 (both pre and during event)
Playtime: ~39 hours total (excluding idle time)

For Makos, isn't Dark Blessing far better, at least until you reach the level cap? I understand Dark Luck gets you more gold even at slightly lower progress, but I'm guessing that the extra progress you can make with mostly ungeared characters will be a far bigger benefit (especially if you don't get Makos' cape as at least a rare).
Edit: Not having access to Dhadius is another reason to avoid Luck, since Calliope boosts Hitch/Jamila just as well as she boosts Makos.

I am doing the same thing, except for the fact that I am a new player and don't have much choice.
Personally I think you are insane for giving up access to all of those other Champions - not having them is such a detriment that I very nearly quit the game as quickly as I joined.

Good luck Psylisa! This will be a good thread to help out new players who come to events fresh.

No, because Gold grows at roughly 25% per stage cleared. Even at 100% bonus, that equates to ~4 stages over your wall. It's unlikely Blessing will grant even a +5 clear bonus.
You are correct that the bonus grows larger (and becomes much more noticeable) as your gear grows. But basically as soon as you can afford Makos' Ult, Luck is the superior choice.

You don't use Makos as primary DPS, you use him as Support. Optimally, with a swap that does group buffs so you can progress. Then you use Makos at your wall to burn down entire groups of mobs with his Ultimate. Barrowin buffing Ultimates makes it a no-brainer, as well. Two buffs on Makos Ult = things die.

Ah, cool. I wasn't sure how the math worked out. I've been short-changing myself at the beginning of each event, so this knowledge will help me get to the higher favor levels a bit faster.

But you don't have Barrowin... I'm not sure why you would recommend a specialization that's use relies on a character you don't have.
Plus I really think you are underestimating just how many extra levels you can get by using Dark Blessing. The buff itself is great (one of the strongest available) but perhaps even more significant is the fact that you don't have to use Makos as a DPS. He is my best geared Champion right now (every equipment slot is filled and he has a purple, a blue, and a green among them) but he still sucks as a primary DPS. Just switching him out from that role alone is enough to get more than 5 extra levels. Not to mention that the rate of progressing through the levels effects things a lot - even before you get to your wall, that money increase isn't going to mean a lot if you would otherwise be 10 levels ahead at that point.
I don't know how often you can get his buff to proc with Barrowin's help as I do not have her, but I do know that without her that buff isn't going to do a thing if he isn't primary DPS.

But it isn't 15, it is 15 divided by the number of people killed by Makos. Considering his basic attack is single target and has a 5.7s cooldown, the only way his personal kill count is going to be above the 50% mark (a generous number - realistically it is more likely to be around the 15% mark) is if he is the sole person in your team doing any significant damage. If that is the case, you can forget being 10 levels behind - that number would easily be tripled.

Pretty much, this. The money is always greater than the levels. The only reason to take Blessing is if you need the extra levels for a goal/achievement and Blessing might be beneficial.

The other key thing for Makos is that he has no innate Party Damage% as he levels. This further diminishes his role as a buffer. Tyril, for comparison has something like 3000% All Party Damage just from levels, and that's in addition to his Moonbeam Buff. Ipsos can check my math, but I think Tyril with a 2000% Moonbeam buff is yielding something like a 6e6 group buff in total. Compared to Makos' measly 4000% (with decent gear), it's laughable.

And yes, I know you can use both. But I was just trying to illustrate how miniscule Makos is as a buffer. Makos is for Gold.

Well, if you read the thread, you'd learn why your assumption is wrong. Makos as Support gets virtually every single kill at your wall. It's certainly greater than 90%. I'll quote myself.

You obviously didn't need to re-quote that considering that was the part I quoted. As stated earlier (if you read the thread), the whole point of what you are doing here is startng again as a new player - us new players don't have access to Barrowin, so using a tactic that relies on a character you can not have is literally impossible.
Even if it were possible, you are talking about Makos taking a support spot - which means you have your DPS slot/s filled by others. Unless you are doing things very wrongly, those DPS slots a going to be killing a whole lot of people between those 5 min cooldown AOEs; so even then Makos isn't getting very single kill. Plus there is obviously a lot of value in not having to be at your keyboard constantly when you are at your wall - but that value is much less quantifiable.

You obvious misunderstood what I was saying.
I was saying it's worth it to always take Luck. Regardless if you are new or not. The math proves it.
And no, your DPS will not be killing a "whole lot things" between Makos' CD. The reason is that a) you are at your wall as you progress, and thus the gold doesn't really matter, and b) the kills by your DPS at your wall largely don't matter due to Makos' Luck scaling. Let's take Jamilah as DPS, for instance.
In the best case, she'll kill 2 mobs every 6 seconds. That means in 5 minutes of CD for Makos (without gear), she'll kill just 100 mobs. Meanwhile, Makos will make at least 800% more gold (without gear) for the 80+ he kills. Your DPS kills one, Makos kills 9 equivalent. And that's WITHOUT gear. When you add in gear, it becomes even clearer.

Barrowin makes it an absolute no-brainer, as it becomes much easier to get a full Ult kill with him. Without Barrowin, you may have to use another Ultimate to weaken them, depends on where you are at in the game.
