100 Gold Chests vs 500 Silvers - A Gear Level Comparison
In this topic, I'll be opening 100 Gold Chests and 500 Silvers to compare average gear level per gem spend. My current theory and feeling is that Silvers provide more gear levels per gem spent.

I'll be updating this as I open. The Silvers I'm opening in lots of 10-20 at the end of each run to maximize favor. So it will be a few days before all the results are in. Plus it's a damn chore to open all the chests. Potions and gold will NOT be counted, only gear.

White = 1 gear level
Green = 2 gear levels
Blue = 6 gear levels
Purple = 24 gear levels

Let it begin![i.imgur.com]

Starting open - 50 Golds and 40 Silvers

Gold
(100 opened so far)
Gear Avg: 12.36 per chest

White: --
Green: 120
Blue: 86
Epic: 20

Total Gear Levels: 1236
Gear level per 500 gems: 12.36

Some screenshots of gold opens. The chests were really quite varied with most falling in the average group. Only a few had double blue items, and I don't recall any with purple+blue gear.

Epic Fail[imgur.com]

NOTE: I have not received any double epic chests (not even potions) yet. Receiving a double epic is probably a very rare event. Caught one double (well triple) epic Gold chest, but two were potions.

Silver
(500 opened so far)
Gear Avg: 1.80 per chest

White: 564
Green: 102
Blue: 22
Epic: --

Total Gear Levels: 900
Gear level per 500 gems: 18.00

CONCLUSION:
Silvers definitely yield more items levels per gem spent than Gold Chests. It's nearly a 50% difference, which is quite large. Right now, the only reason to buy Golds with gems are because Epics only drop in Golds. I can't draw any conclusions about Shiny items, as they are simply too rare.

Suggestion: increase Green by 50% (to +3 levels); increase Blue by 100% (to +12 levels), and increase Purple by 100% (to +48 levels). Or allow for a minimum of 3 pieces of gear in Golds, rather than 2, and up to 5 maximum. Right now, I believe it to be impossible for a Gold chest to drop 5 pieces of gear, just like it's impossible for a Silver to drop 3 pieces of gear.

With the current numbers, this would skew Gold chests enough to be slightly greater than Silvers, as well as provide some additional benefits to duplicate items (especially epics).

Edit: 12/26/17
Added 20 more Silvers after a run. Avg gear went down, 0 blues in that lot.

Edit: 12/27/17
Added 10 more to Gold pile. And got a SHINY![i.imgur.com]
Added 40 more Silvers to pile. Nothing special to note.

Edit 12/28/17
Added 20 more Silvers.

Edit 12/31/17
Added 30 Silvers and 10 Golds. Overall loot level decreased in both, slightly.

Edit 1/6/18
Happy New Year! Finished out the Gold chests. Gear levels barely moved, so I think I'm at a good sample size/average at this point. 12.3 gear levels per chest seems to be pretty consistent.
Added 100 Silvers. Pretty much the same as the Golds by this point. Average barely moves (went from 17.66 to 17.60).
Edit 1/8/18
Added 100 more Silvers. Good lot, quite a few blues, but gear average didn't move much. (from 17.6 to 17.85)
Edit 1/15/18
Finished out all the Silvers! 150 more opened. Silvers are definitely better than golds at equivalent gem spends.

but to get a full set of purples, its better to open golds first..

Not to mention shinies, which.. Are they like, better than purple? And maybe impossible to get out of silvers?
Are shinies another tier entirely or what?

its not better, its the only way to get purple gear. they arent in silver chests.

shiny. they are in silvers and gold, every rarity possible. shiny boost your current gear. its not the gear itself that get shiny. its the gear-slot. f.e.: if you get a common shiny (its better then a normal common), you get a blue normal one in the same slot, it will be also shiny.
the slots can be normal. shiny (silver) golden (only purchase) and give this slot a boost
:)

Not better but the only way to get purples? That seems like a paradox.. Wait, are high level blues better than purples? Wot?

Higher level blues CAN be better than a purple, but the levels carry over. So if you had a level 100 Blue, and then found the Epic version, you'd get the Purple at level 100.

Basically, the base item percentage or effect is determined by the quality.
Then it gets multiplied by the level of the gear.

So if you had a White weapon that increases attack by 50% base at level 101, it would yield 100% bonus.
But if you had the same weapon as Green (boosts by 150%) at level 101, it would yield a 300% bonus.

That's why the rarity is so important - it affects the base value of the item. A Silver Shiny item further increases the base by 50% (multiplicative), and a Golden Shiny item is 100%.

That's kinda insane. So now I'm thinking its best to buy silvers, and just wait till I luckily get the purples from random golds and event chests etc..

It's kind of the other way around. You'll want to buy Golds from early to late game. Purchasing Silvers are useful at the very beginning of the game (when you have no gear) and at the end of the game (when you have all Purples). Silvers are also useful for piling on favor (as in events or new campaigns), but it's not worth purchasing with gems.

Bosses will drop Silvers pretty regularly and keep you stocked.

To add a bit to this answer, Shiny will give you a 1.5x boost of your gear stat, while Golden gives you 2x boost.
To clarify, let's look at Celeste's first two gear slots. Both will give you 230% bonus to all champs damage. Silver Epic gear will give you (230*1.5)% = 345%, while Golden Epic will give you (230*2)% = 460%. You can easily check the Golden stat by opening the gear pack purchase screen in game (you don't have to buy anything).
P.S.
Yes, I have one item in gold and the other on shiny status :D
